RFID Metal Packaging Works as Antenna

QinetiQ and Crown collaborate to develop adaptation of QinetiQ's Omni-ID Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for use on metal packaging. The improvements will enable RFID tags at the unit-level on metal items. Technology advancement is expected to integrate the metal substrate as part of the RFID tag's antenna. ...

... "This will enable brand owners to integrate ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID tags into metal packaging for a wide variety of applications at the single item level. Designed to mitigate issues such as signal reflection, detuning and grounding which reduce or negate RFID's effectiveness on metal packaging or with aqueous-based products, the unique technology leverages several of metal's inherent properties and shifts the format into an advantageous position.

QinetiQ's standalone Omni-ID tags and integrated Omni-ID packaging technology allows a UHF tag to be mounted directly onto the metal substrate. Measuring substantially less than 1mm in thickness, the unique Omni-ID structure collects and focuses RF energy and enables highly efficient coupling to the chip. Another advantage of the system is that RFID chips require only a short coupling antenna rather than the large dipole usually incorporated in UHF tags, significantly reducing manufacturing costs. Crown and QinetiQ are continuing development of the technology for metal packaging to further optimize design. In the near future, it is expected that the metal substrate itself will have an integral role in the way the technology functions. Using a beverage or food can as an example, the can itself would serve as the antenna, simplifying production of the RFID tag and further reducing costs. " ...

High Durability RFID Equipment for Harsh Environments ...

High Durability RFID Equipment for Harsh Environments: Sampling of durable RFID equipment supports operation of RFID capability in harsh operating environments ...

Omron: Omron RFID systems function in a wide range of operating conditions, including harsh environments, where bar coding is not practical. RFID Tags, RFID antennas and RFID controllers are industrially hardened to withstand wet, oily and other adverse conditions. Read reliability in RFID asset tracking and automatic identification is not affected by a misaligned tag or compromised by airborne dust, dirt, oil mist, or other factory conditions. RFID asset tracking systems are non-contact and non-line of sight, which allows them to read and write through non - metallic objects, such as plastic conveyors.

Escort Memory Systems UHF Series / UHF525HT: The UHF525HT is a rugged high-temperature long-range Ultra High Frequency (902-928 MHz) tag. This tag is designed to work at up to four feet. It is ideally suited for Body & Assembly and Paint Shop applications in the automotive industry, the UHF525HT is the only high-temperature tag in the market that survives over 204 Degrees C.

IDENTEC SOLUTIONS, long-range active RFID systems: Long Range Identification: RFID tags can be read from up to 300 feet (100 meters). This allows assets to be monitored in a very large environment with reliable results. Durability: Bar codes become unreadable if they are dirty or scuffed; RFID tags function in almost any harsh environment such as fog, ice and dust. RFID, therefore, reduces the problems associated with those "contact" or "line-of-sight" technologies. This means RFID can operate in harsh environments and will not be affected by temperature changes.

ScanSource RFID Edge: The significant advantage of RFID systems is the no contact, non-line-of-sight nature of the technology. Tags can be read through a variety of substances such as snow, fog, ice, paint, crusted grime, and other visually and environmentally challenging conditions, where barcodes or other optically read technologies would be useless. RFID tags can also be read in challenging circumstances at remarkable speeds, in most cases responding in less than 100 milliseconds.

Zebra RFID Printer R110XiIIIPlus: Built upon Zebra's highly regarded Xi platform, the R110XiIIIPlus is designed for high performance and mission-critical ruggedness in the most demanding environments. It delivers the legendary round-the-clock reliability and heavy-gauge steel durability of Zebra's high-performance Xi series as well as full 4-inch print width, 203-dot per-inch resolution and the extensive connectivity choices of 110XiIIIPlus, making it ideal for shipping, warehousing, and manufacturing. The R110XiIIIPlus will support both Class 0 (read-only) and Class 0+ (read/write) tags.

DC400 RFID Portal System: Turnkey High Performance for Dock Door Visibility: The DC400 from Symbol Technologies delivers a high-performance RFID turnkey solution for premium inventory visibility of assets entering or leaving designated read zones within warehouses, distribution centers, cross dock locations and a variety of other applications. With the DC400, you can automatically identify and track inventory in motion on pallets, bundles of assets on skids or cases using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. IP54 certification for dust and water resistance ensures improved uptime in harsh, industrial environments.

Additional resources on RFID pilots for drug tracking:

Purdue Pharma announced that it is placing RFID tags on bottles of the pain reliever OxyContin (oxycodone) to make it easier to authenticate, as well as to track and trace the medication. OxyContin, which is a controlled substance, has been subject to abuse, theft, and diversion. Based on the availability of sufficient RFID tags, Purdue also plans to tag bottles of Palladone (hydromorphone), a newly approved product to treat persistent moderate-to-severe pain.

Nine months after an FDA task force promoted the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) on drug packaging and labeling to prevent fake products from entering the supply chain, agency officials on November 15 announced that at least four pharmaceutical makers are participating in pilot projects or studies to test the effectiveness of RFID in combating counterfeiting.

GlaxoSmithKline [NYSE: GSK) announced that it will begin using radio frequency identification (RFID) tags in the next 12 to 18 months on at least one product deemed susceptible to counterfeiting in order to more effectively monitor its progress from the company to the patient. GSK is partnering in this pilot project with the US Food and Drug Administration, which is encouraging the use of RFID technology to protect American patients from the growing risk of counterfeit and diverted medicines.

DoD RFID Summit 2005

From CCR, DOD ...

... "2005 DoD RFID Summit for Industry, February 9-10, 2005, Hilton Washington, Washington, D.C.

Hosted by the Office of the Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Supply Chain Integration) and the DoD Logistics AIT Office, the 2005 DoD RFID Summit for Industry is the OFFICIAL platform for the DoD to continue to execute the implementation of the DoD RFID Policy. The Summit's agenda is packed with key DoD RFID Policy drivers, industry leaders, and early adopters and will feature over 50 of the leading RFID solution providers in the exhibit hall. Three distinguished Keynote Addresses will take place during the 2-day Summit." ...

Background: On July 30, 2004, the Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics signed a memorandum outlining policy for the use of RFID within the Department of Defense (DoD). The strategy calls for taking maximum advantage of the inherent life-cycle asset management efficiencies that can be realized with integration of RFID throughout DoD. Leveraging this technology to improve our ability to get the customer the right materiel, at the right time, and in the right condition is a critical part of our End-to-End Warfighter Support initiative. The new policy addresses two general types of RFID tags: (1) active, which contains an internal power source, enabling the tag to hold more data and has a longer "read" range and (2) passive, which does not contain any power source, holds a minimum of data and has a shorter "read" range. Mr. Michael Wynne, Acting Under Secretary of Defense (Acquisition, Technology and Logistics), announced a new policy on July 30, 2004 for the use of radio frequency identification within the Department of Defense. Radio frequency identification - also known as RFID - will enable hands-off processing of materiel transactions, allowing the DoD to re-apportion critical manpower resources to warfighting functions and to streamline business process.

Wi-Fi RFID: AEROSCOUT INTRODUCES THE INDUSTRY’S MOST ADVANCED WI-FI-BASED ACTIVE RFID SOLUTION ...

New AeroScout Engine 3.0 Provides a Complete Suite of Visibility Solutions for a Multitude of Applications

San Mateo, Calif. – December 8, 2004 – AeroScout, Inc., a pioneer in the field of Enterprise Visibility Solutions, today announced the AeroScout Visibility System (AVS), an integrated suite of hardware and software products based around the company’s new AeroScout Engine 3.0. AVS is the industry’s most flexible and complete solution for Wi-Fi-based visibility of assets and people, and the only solution to enable three different location types as well as telemetry functionality, to fit all user application needs.

“Our customers have sophisticated requirements that range from accurate real-time asset location, to vehicle telemetry, to automated inventory counts, to personnel tracking—and they need a single wireless infrastructure that can do it all,” said Andris Berzins, VP of Marketing and Business Development, AeroScout. “AeroScout has introduced the first integrated solution that can meet all of these needs with a single infrastructure, bridging Wi-Fi location and Active RFID at a low total cost.”

AVS is a flexible set of hardware and software products that utilize standard Wi-Fi networks to accurately locate and identify assets or people in indoor and outdoor environments. At the foundation of the system lies the new AeroScout Engine 3.0, the core server-based software that provides location and telemetry processing based on data collected over standard wireless radio frequencies. With the release of version 3.0, the AeroScout Engine has added innovative, new and improved features that bring unparalleled capabilities to users. These include:

· Multiple Location Modes – AeroScout customers can now utilize three different modes of location within a single installation, to best fit the precise needs of any set of applications. Real-Time Location mode offers industry-leading accurate positioning; Presence mode offers Active RFID-style zone detection; and the use of AeroScout Exciter hardware enables Choke-Point detection for doorway and gate coverage.
· Telemetry – AeroScout tags now have the capability to retrieve wired serial data and transmit it over the 802.11 air interface to the AeroScout Engine. For example, this enables vehicle fleet managers to wirelessly transmit vehicle data such as mileage and fuel automatically on a periodic basis or as a vehicle enters and exits the lot.
· Event Management – The AeroScout Engine now contains a centralized Event Management tool for configuring system and application level events from a single console, including alerts and notifications.
· Updated User Interface – The Engine GUI has been updated to provide an even greater ease of use and more refined user experience to AeroScout customers.
· Updated APIs – AeroScout has expanded its set of APIs, enabling application partners to retrieve more complex visibility information and control AeroScout Engine operations via the API.

AeroScout’s innovative products enable customers to immediately take advantage of the Visibility System’s unparalleled flexibility. These products include AeroScout’s industry-leading Wi-Fi-based Active RFID tags, the AeroScout Exciter for choke-point RFID detection and the AeroScout Tag Activator for wireless configuration of large batches of tags. Multiple industries, including manufacturing, health care, logistics, retail and others, utilize AeroScout products to help manage their valuable assets and gain better visibility of their operations, thereby lowering costs, increasing efficiency and driving revenue.

American Port Services (APS), announced as an AeroScout customer today, is a perfect example of the benefits that can be realized with AeroScout solutions. APS, a third party logistics provider, has chosen AeroScout to accurately track the real-time location of hundreds of trailers in their Savannah-based cross-docking facility, operated on behalf of the world’s largest retailer. APS expects to drastically improve efficiency, increase utilization and throughput, and reduce costs with this implementation. For more information, please see Dec. 8 press release “American Port Services Chooses AeroScout’s Active RFID Solution for Yard Management”.

AeroScout Engine 3.0 and the AeroScout Visibility System are currently available for purchase.

AMERICAN PORT SERVICES CHOOSES AEROSCOUT’S ACTIVE RFID SOLUTION FOR YARD MANAGEMENT

RTLS: AeroScout to Provide Wi-Fi-Based Real-Time Location System for Cross-Docking Facility Operated by APS for World’s Largest Retailer ...

San Mateo, Calif. – December 8, 2004 – AeroScout, Inc., a pioneer in the field of Enterprise Visibility Solutions, today announced that American Port Services (APS), a leading third-party logistics (3PL) provider, has deployed its visibility system at a 60-acre cross-docking facility in Savannah, GA operated by APS on behalf of the world’s largest retailer. APS chose AeroScout and partner AGI Worldwide to implement the system, which accurately tracks the location of hundreds of trailers in the facility in real-time in order to improve efficiency, increase utilization and throughput, and reduce costs.

“The AeroScout system is an outstanding solution to a pressing problem in the logistics and transportation industry, and automates a manual trailer-tracking process that used to take a full team of people and hours every day,” said Ty Cobler, Director of Operations, APS. “We expect that AeroScout’s innovative Wi-Fi-based solution will deliver huge efficiency gains for our facility, and provide a quick return on investment.”

The AeroScout Visibility System will enable APS to benefit from accurate and reliable trailer location data at a low total cost of ownership. With only 20 AeroScout Location Receivers, APS has full visibility of the facility’s 1000 trailer spaces spread over 60 acres. When a trailer enters the facility, it is fitted with a small radio device-- AeroScout’s Wi-Fi-based Active RFID tag. As the trailer moves throughout the yard, the tag’s location is accurately tracked in real-time using standard WLAN protocols, allowing APS to easily locate the trailer for loading and unloading. Information about a trailer’s location and contents is integrated with existing yard management systems and shared with partners or customers.

“Third party logistics providers have to compete through the efficiency of their processes, and AeroScout technology will help APS serve their major retail customers even more effectively,” said Andris Berzins, VP of Marketing and Business Development, AeroScout. “This deployment illustrates the strong value that can be achieved through the use of accurate, reliable asset visibility based on standard wireless networking protocols.”

AeroScout was chosen as the technology provider for APS by partner AGI Worldwide, a supply chain consulting organization. AGI researched the real-time location services market on behalf of APS, and chose AeroScout based on a combination of reliability, high performance and a low total cost of ownership. “AeroScout is far ahead of the pack in offering a full-featured, flexible location system that delivers the combined power of Wi-Fi and Active RFID for yard management environments,” said John Bryant, CEO of AGI.

RFID in Emergency Response Technology ...

From Emergency Response Technology Program ...

... "The advantage of the Reader is that it provides added confidence to visual determinations of BioThreat Alert test strip results. The Guardian Reader also provides printed reports and memory storage to ensure chain-of-custody for all samples. It stores batch lot calibration, time and date, specific test information and the serial numbers of both the test strip and Reader on an RFID microchip in the BioThreat Alert test strip. This enables the BioThreat Alert test strip results and data to be read elsewhere so it can be tracked through a laboratory analysis and also serve as a basis for evidentiary purposes. " ...

DOD RFID Summit for Industry ...

From Automatic Identification Technology Office ...

... "February 9-10, 2005 . Announcing the 2005 DOD RFID Summit for Industry to be held at Washington Hilton & Towers in Washington, DC. Make plans now to attend! Registration is now open and reservations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Date & Location:
February 9-10, 2005
Hilton Washington
Washington, DC, U.S.A.

The Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Supply Chain Integration) will host a third industry meeting on February 9-10, 2005 to continue to execute their DOD RFID Policy.
The DOD RFID Policy "establishes policy for the use of RFID within the DOD and initiates a strategy to take maximum advantage of the inherent life-cycle asset management efficiencies that can be realized with integration of RFID throughout DOD." The DOD RFID Summit for Industry Objective:
The Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense, Supply Chain Integration has taken the lead to facilitate the implementation of the RFID policy within the DOD and is hosting the DOD RFID Summit for Industry to provide information on:

The Implementation Plan - review of the roadmap that targets critical distribution functions
within the Defense Distribution Depots, depot maintenance facilities, and strategic aerial ports.
Scheduled implementation timeline and requirements for suppliers based on procurement
methods, classes/commodities, location and layers of packaging.
Technical details on RFID technology compliance.
DFAR Update.
Industry Implementations.
Showcase of RFID technology providers.

On July 30, 2004, the Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics signed a memorandum outlining policy for the use of RFID within the Department of Defense (DoD).

The policy directs the adoption of specific business rules for the active, high data capacity RFID currently used in the DoD operational environment to ensure continued support for ongoing Combatant Commander in-transit visibility requirements and operations. The policy states that DoD will be an early adopter of innovative, passive RFID technology that leverages the Electronic Product Code (EPC) and compatible RFID tags. The policy will require suppliers to put passive RFID tags on lowest possible piece part/case/pallet packaging by January 2005." ...

RFID in Freight Planning ...

From FHWA ...

... "But the customer demands are really a key component of everything we do. In addition to what goes on inside the industry, an additional customer requirement that is out there, is radio frequency identity, or RFID. RFID is a hot topic across a lot of vendors, especially because of Wal-Mart, one of the largest retailers in the world, has decided that this will be their new method, not only security tracking but also product traffic. RFID is the next step, if you ever walk through the retailer that has the little scanners as you walk out the door, that beeps if they don't deactivate the strip inside. The RFID is actually an enhanced version of that. What it does it allows the retailer to automatically store the serial number of that product, time and date, where it was purchased, not just the store, but actual city, state, regional locations. As that product moves through the store, and if it should ever return, in exchange or the product wasn't defective when you got it home, when they scan that, they should automatically be able to tell, how long it was out, the reason for that term, once it is brought back and everything is automatically linked to that serial number. That information can then be passed back to the manufacturer for use in their own quality tests, their own product tracking, to see who registered users are. Typically when you purchase a product, you have a little card to fill out, you have to mail that in, call a phone number or log onto the Internet. The radio frequency identity, one advantage that is coming out in the next few years, once you purchase that product, your serial number is already registered with the manufacturer. It is just attaching your name and -- information to that purchase. So it is the next step in product registration. But it has a great amount of potential and some really " ...

RFID Supply Chain ...

From The Committee on Energy and Commerce, Mr. William Galione, Vice President and General Manager Marketing and Sales America, Philips Semiconductors, ...

... "Almost every item sold through retailers and supermarkets around the world today has a barcode printed on it. These codes are used extensively throughout distribution chains and are unique to the general type of item being sold. However, in recent years barcodes have begun to show their limitations, and a replacement approach based on RFID technology is gaining momentum. RFID technology relies on small computer chips and antennas integrated into a paper or plastic label -- called a tag -- that can be scanned by an electronic reading device. The scan allows automatic collection of data on the chip, which can include information on warranty, where the product was manufactured, or product details such as quantity, size, color, etc. First developed in the 1940s, RFID technology has proven itself reliable over time, with falling cost structures and further technology refinement allowing it to be used in more common applications today. Unlike barcodes, RFID tags are insensitive to dirt or scratches and can be scanned from a distance -- from a few inches to upwards of 20-25 feet -- all without requiring direct line of sight. RFID technology also allows multiple tags to be scanned simultaneously, even through external packaging. This presents a significant advantage over barcodes in distribution and retail environments, which is where the new generation of RFID technology is making major inroads. Adoption of RFID technologies is spearheading revolutionary gains in supply chain management, allowing businesses to improve supply chain logistics and customer service. Major retailers -- including co-panelist Wal-Mart and other organizations such as the Department of Defense -- that manage huge inventories are leading the supply chain transition to RFID technology. RFID Compliance: Videojet®, Accu-Sort join forces to offer widest range of RFID compliance products

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (November 8, 2004) — Videojet® Technologies Inc. (VJ) and Accu-Sort Systems Inc. (ASI) have partnered to provide the widest range of RFID compliance products for the retail supplier market. VJ is the industry leader in variable coding while ASI is the leader in auto ID, with more than 40 installed RFID systems. Together they have joined R&D forces to develop the widest range of RFID tag applicators targeted to help retail suppliers meet RFID compliance mandates, while also benefiting from efficiencies in their own operations. The FAST Tag™ product line offers solutions to almost every customer compliance challenge, from mobile tag encoders for manual application to batch tag application on a manufacturing line to fully integrated tag application systems for a DC material handling system.

“This partnership means that VJ/ASI solutions will not only allow customers to meet compliance needs but, with the FAST software, help them achieve efficiencies today,” said Bob Joyce, President of ASI. Added Robert Willett, President of Coding and Marking at VJ, “Together, we provide the industry’s largest field forces in the United States and globally. We are uniquely positioned to help customers roll out RFID across their operations quickly and with a high level of quality.”

Customers receive ‘FAST’ benefits: The partnership takes advantage of Videojet’s label application technology, and Accu-Sort’s integrated software suite and RFID experience. The product line consists of three products:

FAST Tag Mobile: VJ and ASI have combined a desktop encoder and label printer with the FAST integration software to create a mobile solution. This solution is the easiest way for manufacturers to implement a compliant RFID solution when they are not yet ready to fully automate their RFID tag application.

FAST Tag LA: VJ’s reliable label applicator is combined with ASI’s software to create an easy-to-use tag application system for batch applications. This saves operator time by automatically applying tags while reducing tag damage. This is the ideal bolt-on solution for customer’s existing production lines.

FAST Tag In-Motion: VJ and ASI technology are combined to create a flexible and automated tag application solution. The FAST Tag In-Motion system performs inbound identification of the product bar code, retrieves the EPC code and product information from the company’s product database, tests the RFID tag for validity before encoding the tag with the appropriate EPC data and rejects bad tags if necessary. FAST Tag provides 100 percent item tracking and tracing with the use of bar code and RFID verification devices, ensuring that the right tag gets on the right box every time. With integrated EPC tag serial number management and the ability to interface with new or existing material handling equipment and IT systems, FAST Tag makes it easy to meet compliance tagging requirements.

ASI’s Joyce said the partnership should yield even greater reliability and innovation in the future. “The Videojet and Accu-Sort partnership combines the technology and capabilities of the leaders in coding and auto ID. Videojet understands the challenges of coding and applying labels. Accu-Sort understands RFID and how tags are read downstream at the distribution center. Our partnership with Videojet means we will continue to offer customers the broadest range of compliance product solutions in the industry.”
