IBM RFID retail store architecture ...
Vue, Pricer, and IBM collaborate to deliver RFID technology that supports shelf edge management. ...

... "Vue Technology, the leading provider of item level RFID solutions, and Pricer AB, the leading supplier of electronic display and information systems, announced that they have collaborated with IBM to provide retailers with a breakthrough solution for RFID enabled shelf edge management. The new solution leverages real time item level data collected via RFID to expand the use of electronic shelf labels (ESLs) beyond static price and stock displays. The new innovation will be on display in IBM's booth at the Retail Systems 2006 Conference & Exposition, May 22-24. The shelf-edge management solution enables retailers to consistently deliver the right item level inventory information to their store associates and customers; and for suppliers it is an opportunity to ensure that their new products are not sitting in the store back room. Through the integration of Vue Technology's TrueVUE RFID Platform, Pricer's integrated ESL solution, and IBM's Store Integration Framework, retailers can now cost effectively deploy a seamless solution for item-level inventory tracking and shelf-level management. Displaying critical retail store information directly at the shelf edge enhances the overall customer experience while reducing out-of-stocks and increasing sales.

With critical item level retail information now available at the shelf edge, through the integration of RFID and ESL technology via IBM's Store Integration Framework, sales associates can quickly and efficiently identify exact inventory needs and expedite restocking while business operations staff can remotely monitor inventory levels across stores and generate critical inventory alerts. At the same time, the TrueVUE RFID Platform provides visibility for the IT operations staff to remotely monitor and maintain the RFID network. " ...

H.R. 4218, High-Performance Computing Revitalization Act of 2004

... "Omnipresent communications keeps the world online and in touch 24-hours a day. Some experts believe that by 2006 the number of devices attached to the Internet everything from PCs, smart phones and set-top boxes to RFID tags, home appliances and automobiles will approach ten billion; the number of users will approximate one billion; the number of online buyers a half-billion; and the total amount of commerce $5.5 trillion. Adidas is even putting them in running shoes. Open standards are integrating all this technology and enabling it to amass and transmit information. The availability of information on such a scale and timeframe leads to decisions, decisions to actions, actions to change and change to the need for response. The pace of change will only accelerate and its magnitude will only increase with the constant proliferation and integration of technology." ...

RFID in a watch that's smarter than you?

... "The tags consist of an electronic circuit, antenna and memory chip. When pinged by a radio signal, they answer with an ID code identifying the tagged object. The tags currently cost about 50 cents each, and that price is expected to drop dramatically with increased demand as such corporate giants as Walmart implement RFID systems to manage their inventory. The UW smart watch system equips users with a wristwatch that acts as an interface, driven by a small personal server that the wearer can easily carry in a pocket but which will eventually be part of the wristwatch itself. Important items are labeled with RFID tags and RFID readers are installed at various locations - home, car and work, for instance - to read the tags. When the person passes a reader, the reader pings the tags and the ID information is broadcast locally to the user's personal server, which processes it and checks to see that all critical items are present. The server also takes into account the last known location of items, the user's calendar and where the user may be going. If the server finds that an item is missing and will be needed, it signals the watch to prompt the wearer. " ...

RFID Savi Smart Seal: Technology to Enhance Freight Transportation Security and Productivity - A-2. Event-Driven Tools

From DOT, FHWA Freight Management and Operations ...

... "SmartSeal electronics are being married with both bolt and cable barrier seals and the electronics are available to license by others. The seal combines random codes with a unique tag ID giving high protection against counterfeits, swaps, and hacks. Data storage is variable, 32 to 128 KB. The battery is rated for five years. Range is tunable up to 300 feet. The tags have multi-frequency options, making them more amenable to use across major trading areas. They are also compatible with DoD's 433 MHz RFID reader infrastructure, including those in commercial sea- and airports. An added capability is immediate seal location and status reporting in terminals equipped with a configuration of readers and beacons known in the industry as Real Time Locations Systems (RTLS). Savi reports SmartSeal can be tuned to slot-level accuracy.
Pricing of the seals is about $50 in small numbers; large production runs may reduce the price by over two-thirds. The bolt seals would require a new bolt for each application, but the cable seal should be fully reusable. SmartSeal was announced in November 2001 and initial sales are reported to Futaba, a Taiwanese electronics firm." ...

DOD RFID: RFID Initiatives - The Race Against Time and Technology

In addition to the fixed RFID systems initiative, the DOD is also developing and utilizing alternative technologies for use of a third generation RFID in the next major global conflict. The third generation technologies will use satellite communications as the primary means of communication to effectively track DOD assets. This satellite tracking enhances DOD’s In-Transit Visibility capabilities.

MAJ John Fontana and Steve Jennings write:

... The race for radio frequency identification (RFID) and tracking methods is "on" because many of today’s technological, supply chain and logistical leaders see RFID as this decade’s version of the Internet once the technology’s standard and price competitiveness can be developed. Leading the charge for the initiative are the Department of Defense (DOD) and the retail giant Wal-Mart, both convinced that RFID in their internal and external supply chains could save billions of dollars. The DOD will use RFID technology to become more fluid and efficient in its logistical challenges to deploy troops, equipment and supplies quickly to all areas of the globe in times of crisis. ...

DOD RFID - RFID in the next major global conflict

RFID is in position to become the technology that can truly change how government organizations and businesses interact with their suppliers for the movement and management of products. The overall promise of RFID and its potential cost savings are why RFID has become one of the hottest technological trends in logistics and supply chain management. The ability to track and manage product movement at all points throughout the distribution channels will enable increased efficiencies. With DOD and private businesses the size of Wal-Mart leading the charge, RFID could change the entire landscape of supply chain management and logistics forever.

RFID Partners: NEC, Tagsys join hands for RFID

From Cnet Asia, Asia ... As part of the deal, equipment maker Tagsys will supply radio frequency identification (RFID) systems such as tags, readers, antennas and security gates. ...

With a global brand presence of over 40 million RFID tags, ten thousand reader systems and 500 installations globally, TAGSYS has emerged as the world's leading dedicated RFID supplier. Underscoring TAGSYS' core competencies is enabling complete efficiency-driven, ROI-weighted solutions for identifying and tracing items in highly specialized vertical markets and embedded systems.

The RFID asset tracking market can be segregated by the radio frequency used by the RFID tags and RFID readers to communicate with each other. In the last few years technological development, and more recently, industry standardization, have centered on high frequency (13.56 MHz) and Ultra High Frequency (868-915 MHz) systems development. Each of these frequencies has strong price/performance trade-offs that relate to specific use cases.
