Airport RFID Services Baggage Handling Process

Hong Kong International Airport will implement Avery's RFID tag in its baggage tracking process, with the goal of improving the customer experience. ...

... "Unlike bar code-only tags, which require the scanner to be in the line-of-sight to read the tag, the AD-833 RFID tag, specifically designed around aviation needs, can be read at long distances without line-of-sight in any orientation. RFID systems are also more reliable, achieving average read-rates of more than 97 percent, much better than a barcode-only system’s average of 80 percent. As a result, RFID tags allow more accurate tracking of baggage through HKIA’s baggage system. By empowering timely and accurate checked bag deliveries to the planes, airlines and passengers experience more on-time departures. In addition, the system reduces misdirected bags resulting in improved customer service. " ...

Airport RFID Trials Include Heathrow

Emirates Airline will invest in RFID technology trials at three airports: London Heathrow, Dubai International and Hong Kong International. The pilots will integrate RFID tags into the tracking of baggage in order to validate its effectiveness compared to barcoding and position the airline with a scalable solution for the future, where baggage volume is expected to increase. ...

Emirates Airline will pilot RFID baggage tracking at Heathrow

... "Emirates will be investing close to AED 2 million, to test the effectiveness and benefits of RFID against the existing barcode tracking system. The largest-ever trial of its kind for the airline industry, some half a million bags on Emirates flights will be tagged with RFID chips over the 6-month duration of the trial.

The Dubai-based airline hopes its investment will help revolutionise the way bags are tracked and monitored, and present innovative solutions to handle the increasing volumes of baggage every year as more people around the world use air travel more frequently.

With 58 of the double-decked A380 aircraft entering Emirates' service, each doubling the number of bags handled per aircraft, the airline is keen to find innovative technologies and new ways to improve baggage handling infrastructure and safeguard the level of trust of its customers.

RFID equipment has been installed at some of Emirates' check-in desks at the three participating airports. During the trial, trained staff will apply tags containing RFID chips to bags as part of the normal check-in process. The chips contain stored information including the bag unique ID number and route. In addition to the embedded RFID chips, these tags will also continue to display the traditional bar code.

The chips are read as they pass through the airport's baggage system, enabling effective sorting, security screening and delivery to the aircraft. Arriving bags are read on entry to the baggage system and receipted into the system for effective tracking. Essentially, the chips will enable bags to be tracked at every stage of their journey, and minimise the possibilities for mishandling baggage. " ...

The PDAs read maintenance-relevant information from the RFID tags installed on ventilation shutters and act as clients to the ERP software for reporting and archiving. Because the PDAs can read tags only at a distance of three centimeters or less, the mobile scenario confirms that service technicians duly checked each vent on their work orders. In addition to safeguarding maintenance processes and generating reports in compliance with federal regulations, the solution helps the company maintain a complete view across the entire asset life cycle and more quickly locate reoccurring faults. Integrated Business Systems and Services, Inc. ("IBSS") designs, develops, markets and supports Synapse, a family of web-based on-line transaction processing tools and vertical application software products for use throughout large and medium-sized organizations. Synapse was developed for mission critical, enterprise, mobile applications, as well as automated data collection including RFID. The framework is based on a powerful rules based on-line transaction-processing engine. Companies needing to extend current applications or create new integrated applications using mobile computing devices such as PDA’s, cell phones, or ADC equipment will find Synapse an ideal framework to develop and deploy a variety of applications on an unlimited number of different hardware technologies. In today’s “always connected” computing environment it may be necessary to implement multiple types of RFID and other ADC solutions and different mobile computing platforms, in order to achieve a broad spectrum of business goals and objectives. Because there is no “one size fits all” hardware / technology solution for this variety of applications, it becomes difficult to manage the disparate software systems or tool sets that come with each vendors product. This is where Synapse has a distinct advantage. It provides a single framework in which all of the networks, devices, transactions, interfaces, integration methods and business rules can be defined and managed.

TSA will select airports and technologies for the program. Biometric technologies, possibly including fingerprints, retinal (iris) scans, and facial recognition, are expected to be part of the mix. So are next-generation surveillance cameras that could be used at access points for secure areas to guard against a second person slipping into a secure area on the heels of someone with proper credentials. Technologies in the program could also contribute to a Transportation Worker Identification Card, which is being developed and is expected to be used by millions of workers across all forms of transportation.

The Aviation and Transportation Security Act mandated that the "Administrator shall establish pilot program in no fewer than 20 airports to test and evaluate new and emerging technology for providing access control and other security protections for closed or secure areas of the airports. Such technology may include biometric or other technology that ensures only authorized access to secure areas."

Access to airport controlled areas must be secured and the physical security of aircraft must be ensured. Revision of the basic code of federal regulations for airport and air carrier security published in the Federal Register on August 1 1997 will include strengthening access controls and aircraft security. Research has begun on more efficient and effective use of existing perimeter and sensitive area surveillance systems. The FAA is conducting research on radio frequency identification tags that could possibly assist in tracking checked baggage movement in secure areas of the airport.

RFID Partners: Manhattan Associates and Matrics Announce Alliance to Aid RFID Adoption

Partners to Deliver Best-in-Class RFID Solutions to Consumer Goods Industry

ATLANTA, April 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Manhattan Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: MANH), the global leader in providing supply chain execution (SCE) solutions, and Matrics Inc., a global leader in the design and manufacture of electronic product code (EPC)-compliant Radio Frequency identification (RFID) systems, announce an alliance to accelerate adoption of RFID technology throughout the consumer goods supply chain.

The primary goal of this alliance is to help clients reduce overall costs and increase profitability by combining RFID tag and reader technology, with RFID-enabled supply chain execution solutions. The benefits to customers include improved accuracy and distribution efficiencies, shorter order cycle times, elimination of unnecessary handling and expenses and enhanced customer satisfaction, for an overall competitive advantage.

Manhattan Associates offers a variety of Integrated Logistics Solutions, including RFID. As the first supply chain software provider to join the Auto-ID Center (now EPCglobal), Manhattan Associates was an early adopter of EPC-compliant technology. The company has continued to build a solid leadership position with the development of its RFID in a Box solution(TM), which incorporates Integration Platform for RFID, RFID-enabled SCE applications and Implementation Services for RFID. Manhattan Associates has partnered with best-in-class RFID suppliers such as Matrics in order to leverage its solutions to its target markets.

"Teaming with Matrics allows us to offer the consumer goods industry a smart, reliable choice for complete RFID solutions," commented Greg Gilbert, RFID strategist for Manhattan Associates. "By aligning our RFID solutions with Matrics tag and reader functionality, we can ensure that customers who face pending compliance mandates meet deadlines, while realizing the added benefits of source to consumption supply chain operations."

RFID technology uses tags or transponders to transmit EPCs and communicate wirelessly to readers over radio frequency waves. Attached to physical objects, including items, cartons, pallets and containers, the tags uniquely identify objects. Readers receive data from the RFID tags via radio frequency waves once the tags are within reading range. This data is captured, accepted and executed against by RFID solutions, such as those offered by Manhattan Associates.

The Matrics RFID system is comprised of EPC-compliant RFID tags (Class 0 read only and read/write) and its new, multi-protocol reader (AR 400 RFID Reader), which is designed to enable real-time, seamless tag reading and writing capability for all EPC-compliant tags including Class 0 and Class 1. Matrics' RFID technology reads farther and faster and costs less than comparable systems, providing unsurpassed real-time visibility into products and assets in factories, distribution centers and retail outlets.

"We are pleased to be partnering with Manhattan Associates, a leader in the supply chain execution space," said Bob McFarland, senior vice president of supply chain sales for Matrics. RFID Reader: MATRICS INTRODUCES THE INDUSTRY'S MOST ADVANCED RFID READER

True, multi-protocol AR 400 enables easy network integration and provides real-time reading and writing for all EPC-compliant tags

Columbia, MD - March 30, 2004 - Matrics Inc., a global leader in the design and manufacture of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), today announced the introduction of a breakthrough device that incorporates RFID multi-protocol reader technology with enhanced network features. The AR 400 RFID Reader has started shipping in limited quantities and the company is ramping up production based on strong customer demand.

The AR platform is the second generation of Matrics' RFID readers, which fundamentally changes the nature of the RFID reader from a static device into a network element that collects, writes, processes, and communicates information from all EPC classes of RFID tags.

The AR 400 RFID Reader will integrate easily into a customer's existing network infrastructure, while the AR platform is designed to be easily upgraded as new standards evolve in the marketplace, protecting our customers' investment. Customers will be able to manage and service their RFID readers through their internal network or remotely, including via the Web. This will dramatically reduce the time and maintenance costs associated with managing RFID systems.

"Our new AR platform is fundamentally different than anything on the market today," said Piyush Sodha, Chairman and CEO of Matrics. "Our customers are telling us that it is critical that RFID readers integrate into existing network infrastructure and not be managed as a separate technology tool."

The AR 400 is more than a typical RFID reader. It provides timely and pertinent information to customers' Network Management platform by real-time reporting of events and status using SNMP. To address security concerns, it provides security and privilege controls and full traceability of operator actions. The AR 400 is a ready-to-connect network element that provides a variety of options for connecting to customers' corporate networks via Ethernet or Serial connections and wirelessly via 802.11. A configuration Setup Wizard makes commissioning tags extremely easy.

A true, multi-protocol reader, the AR 400 RFID Reader provides real-time, seamless tag reading and writing capability for all EPC-compliant tags: Class 0 (read only, and read/write) and Class 1. This flexibility is critical to protect customers' RFID investment.

"We are working actively with RFID middleware and systems integration providers," said Bob McFarland, senior vice president of supply chain sales at Matrics. "Matrics is offering APIs to our partners for development of value-added applications and features that will further enhance the integration of the AR 400 RFID Reader into a customer's enterprise backbone."

Mobile RFID Asset Solutions: TrenStar and Matrics Announce Strategic Partnership to Deliver Standard Solutions to Select Industries

CLEVELAND – NA 2004 – March 29 – TrenStar Inc. and Matrics Inc. are partnering to deliver the first standard, UHF Radio Frequency Identification-enabled (RFID-enabled) mobile asset solutions to select industries.

TrenStar’s “pay-per-use” mobile asset management business model that combines RFID and asset tracking technologies with outsourced logistics services will now feature Matrics’ UHF Passive RFID technology in food, chemical and other selected industries where large numbers of assets are moving rapidly through global supply chains. Mobile assets are broadly used in many industries to transport raw materials, work-in-progress and finished goods.

The combined solution includes RFID tags, handheld and vehicle-mounted readers, and antennae arrays designed specifically to support the unique business processes of the targeted industries. David Adams, TrenStar corporate strategy senior vice president, said that clients can expect improved efficiency of mobile asset management, reduced losses of both assets and contents and reduced operating costs.

“We’ve created an industry standard solution for managing mobile assets,” said Adams. “Our joint solution combines the right mobile assets with the right RFID infrastructure with the right technology layer for specific industries, therefore we offer them dramatically improved supply chain performance.”

“Passive UHF RFID technology is reliable and economical, and it meets the demanding requirements of industries like chemical and food,” said Girish Rishi, Matrics senior vice president, marketing. “Now, TrenStar and Matrics are offering RFID capability with world-class mobile asset technology. Our joint customers will be delighted with the operational efficiencies they will gain from our industry-focused solutions.”

The partnership expands upon a prior relationship between Matrics and TrenStar’s Global Container Management L.L.C. (GCM) unit. GCM has delivered a complete mobile asset management solution – containers, services and technology – to Kraft Foods.
