RFID Airline Luggage Efficiency Enabler ...

SITA recommends RFID technology for luggage tracking ...

... "SITA is among those recommending that airlines or airports pay for Radio Frequency Identification technology. An RFID tag is automatically scanned by numerous stationary readers that record each movement a bag makes through the system. " ...

RFID Airline Luggage Efficiency Enabler: Via Lexington Herald-Leader: Low-tech bag tracing is due for an upgrade ...

Mishandled baggage costing $2.5 billion as air travel passenger numbers soar to two billion says SITA: "It recommends that markets where mishandled baggage is a problem would be better served by adopting technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tagging and bag reconciliation systems to track baggage at various points throughout the bag's journey. RFID means fewer bags have to be handled manually and improves security. A recent survey by SITA - in partnership with the Airports Council International and Airline Business magazine - found that RFID tags are being used for baggage handling in just 6% of airports surveyed but also identified an expectation that RFID tags will be used in 45% of airports by the end of 2009. SITA has developed an integrated, end-to-end baggage reconciliation system which combines RFID, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and highly redundant IP-based global links to ensure baggage gets to its destination with the minimum of fuss. RFID EPC Anti-Counterfeit Drug Initiative

Panel 5--Anti-Counterfeit Drug Initiative--Meeting Minutes ...

... "The product of this research was electronic product code or EPC. The Auto-ID Center and its participating sponsor companies conducted extensive pilots on EPC technology to test its performance in real world supply chain applications. Since MIT and Auto-ID Center are research institutions, they wanted to license this technology to an organization that could commercialize the EPC for worldwide use. Since the Uniform Code Council was a founding sponsor and had a 30-year track record in standards, it was a natural next step that the UCC take a leading role in bringing the EPC to market. In May of this year MIT finalized an agreement with the UCC and its global partner, EAN International, to standardize this emerging RFID technology on a worldwide basis. In order to support this effort, the UCC and EAN formed a joint venture called EPCglobal to drive the commercialization of the EPC. In order to move this technology from the research phase to the real world of business, the EPCglobal organization is focused on working with industry users to develop the necessary standards to drive broad adoption. It is a multi-industry focus and the standards will be developed in a user-drive consensus-based process. " ...

Importance of RFID Standards ...

US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation

Mr. Christopher Koch, President and CEO, World Shipping Council ...

... "It is important to keep in mind, however, that no international standard exist today for the application of RFID-based e-seals or for active, read/write RFID tags. Nor has a clear and appropriate delineation been drawn between the possible usage of RFID technology to address container security requirements and the possible usage of that technology to address supply chain management objectives. These are not trivial issues. The issues, the challenges, and the requirements involved in addressing the two are not the same. The purposes and the use are not the same. The technology, operational and information implications are different. A failure to clearly distinguish between security requirements and commercial supply chain management objectives will create confusion; will impede progress on these issues; and may in fact create significant security vulnerabilities. RFID in Shipping and Transportation ...

From US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation, State of Maritime Security, The Testimony of Mr. Christopher Koch, President and CEO, World Shipping Council ...

... "Consideration of e-seals usually involves the application of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, and in fact many of the products and platforms being marketed as enhancing container security also rely on that technology. Recent announcements by the Department of Defense and major retailers concerning the usage of RFID tags on products have also spurred significant interest in the technology.
It is important to keep in mind, however, that no international standard exist today for the application of RFID-based e-seals or for active, read/write RFID tags. Nor has a clear and appropriate delineation been drawn between the possible usage of RFID technology to address container security requirements and the possible usage of that technology to address supply chain management objectives. RFID: Sanjay Sarma Testimony ...

From The Committee on Energy and Commerce, Dr. Sanjay Sarma, Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology states ...

... "In 1999, the Uniform Code Council, Inc. (UCC), a not-for-profit standards making body based in Lawrenceville, N.J., which had spearheaded the adoption of bar code technology, joined with Procter & Gamble and The Gillette Co. in helping establish the Auto-ID (Automatic Identification) Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Sponsorship of the center soon grew to more than 100 global companies, and research spread beyond MIT to five other great research universities around the world: at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom; the University of Adelaide in Australia; Keio University in Tokyo, Japan; Fudan University in Shanghai, China; and the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. The center's mission was to develop RFID for use across the global supply chain. The vision was simple: harness the capability of RFID to create a world in which we can effectively track products throughout the supply chain using a single, global network as products move from one company to another, one country to another. The idea behind this vision was to make it as easy for one company to read another company's tags as it is for IBM computers to communicate with Apple machines over the Internet. One focus of the center's work was the development of the identification system for objects in the system -- the EPC. Another was the development of the entire system in which EPC tags could be used -- the EPCglobal Network. " ...

RFID LifeCycle Issues: OFEE and EPA Host Meeting on Recycling Impacts of RFID Tags

From Office of the Federal Environmental Executive ...

... "OFEE and the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Solid Waste co-hosted a meeting on the impact of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags on packaging materials reuse and recycling. Participants included representatives of the Department of Defense, the General Services Administration, the industrial drum recyclers, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, and the paper, steel, aluminum, glass, and plastic packaging industries. The intent of the meeting was to provide the potentially affected recyclers and users of recycled materials with an understanding of what RFID tags are, what constituents they contain, and how they are and will be used. Wal-Mart is requiring its top 100 suppliers to place RFID tags on product cases and pallets by January 2005, beginning in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The use of RFID tags is intended to improve inventory control and logistics. The Department of Defense also will require the placement of RFID tags on specified products going to specified depots beginning in January 2005. Other users of the tags are Target Stores, Best Buy, and the Albertsons grocery store chain. RFID tags also could be used in the future to meet new Food and Drug Administration requirements to label medications." ...

RFID Network: VeriSign Links EPC Network to GDSN

From InternetNews.com ... with Forrester Research. "Bringing the two together is also a critical step in realizing the value of RFID.". Mountain View, Calif ...

The EPC Network Vision: In the Auto-ID Center's vision, RFID readers are placed throughout the supply chain... When a shipment arrives at a retail store, the store's inventory system reflects the new products automatically, and as soon as a product is taken from the shelf, the inventory system adjusts accordingly. The EPC Network captures all of these changes and makes them available to supply chain partners in a secure and seamless system. With such detailed monitoring of individual products, theft and fraud will be significantly reduced, efficiencies in supply chain labors will be realized, and costly exceptions within the supply chain (e.g., product recalls) can be handed more easily. The Auto-ID Center has assigned commercial development of the Electronic Product Code EPC Network to EPCGlobal, Inc., a non-profit organization formed by European Article Numbering International and the Uniform Code Council.
