Comments on the Smart Card Forum ...

From Consumer Privacy and Smart Cards — A Challenge and an Opportunity ...

... "The consumer should be educated about what a smart card is. A brief description of how smart cards work may be helpful in dealing with consumers. The following may be useful general information in doing that. There are two basic kinds of smart cards. An intelligent smart card contains a microprocessor that actually stores and secures information and makes decisions as required by the card issuer's specific application needs. New information can be added to these cards and processed by the microprocessing unit. Monetary value, for example, can be added or debited as required. The second type of card is better described as a memory card. These cards are primarily information storage cards that contain stored value which the consumer can spend in a pay phone, retail, vending or related transaction. Many of today's prepaid telephone cards are memory cards. In both types of cards, the integrated circuit chip allows the stored information to be protected from damage or theft. " ...

RFID Technology: Fujitsu Solution Forum 2004 to Be Held , July 7 - 9 , 2004

From Japan Corporate News (press release), Japan ... has been very rapid development in the technologies that herald the dawn of the ubiquitous networking era, such as information, mobile and RFID technologies. ...

Fujitsu Limited has developed the MB89R116, an FRAM(1)-embedded chip for radio frequency identification (RFID)(2) tags that can, at high speeds, read/write data 100 times greater than bar-codes and 30 times(3) greater than tags using EEPROM. The new chip is designed for precision tracking of product quality as products move through distribution channels, and can be used for a wide variety of products.

Radio frequency tags, also known as "smart tags," are small product labels that contain a LSI chip with wireless and memory functions. The non-volatile memory can be used to store detailed product and logistics information, which can be written and read without requiring physical contact with a reader module. This technology has been attracting attention as a key structural element in the realization of a ubiquitous networked society.

Fujitsu is a leading provider of customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace. Pace-setting technologies, high-reliability/performance computing and telecommunications platforms, and a worldwide corps of systems and services experts make Fujitsu uniquely positioned to unleash the infinite possibilities of the broadband Internet to help its customers succeed. Headquartered in Tokyo, Fujitsu Limited (TSE:6702) reported consolidated revenues of 5 trillion yen (about US$38 billion) for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2002.

Univ of California at Berkeley's RFID Smart Dust Program

UCalBerkeley is working on an RFID Smart Dust project to build a self-contained, millimeter-scale sensing and communication platform for a massively distributed sensor network... ...will be around the size of a grain of sand and will contain sensors, computational ability, bi-directional wireless communications, and a power supply, while being inexpensive enough to deploy by the hundreds... ...to build a complete, complex system in a tiny volume using state-of-the art technologies, which will require evolutionary and revolutionary advances in integration, miniaturization, and energy management.

Smart Dust is the innovation of Associate Professor Kris Pister and Professor Randy H. Katz. They are researching this topic at University of California, Berkeley. RFID smart dust is the convergence of three technologies: digital circuitry, wireless communications, and MEMS (Micro ElectroMechanical Systems), which must shape this equipment into a space no more than one or two cubic millimeters in size.

Wireless sensor technologies were explored at a U.S. Department of Commerce Forum on April 1, 2004, addressing the current and potential uses of sensor technologies by both industry and government as well as the public policy implications of widespread deployment.

AIAG RFID Standard: RFID Tire Traceability

In a demonstration of industry responsiveness and cooperation, the Automotive Industry Action Group's (AIAG) Automatic Identification Data Collection Work Group has released its revised Tire and Wheel Label and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) standard. Developed by the group in just under a year, the standard will provide benefits such as helping error-proof the tire assembly process and automating the collection of tire information and traceability.

Based on the AIAG B-4 Parts Identification and Tracking standard, the revision provides suppliers with guidelines for printing and placement of two-dimensional (2D) bar code labels and passive read/write RFID tags on tires and wheels for product identification.

"The 2D bar codes and RFID tags will help support the assembly process and provide item-level traceability throughout the vehicle's lifecycle," said William J. Hoffman, chairman of AIAG's RFID Tire and Wheel Identification Work Group and manager of Auto Supply Chain for Intermec Technologies Corp. "With a 2D label or RFID tag, a portable database can reside on tires, increasing accurate data capture and reducing the dependency of looking up tire information on a computer."

Placed on the inside of vehicle tires, the RFID tags would identify tires that are associated with a specific vehicle. Data - including a 12-character coding structure or Department of Transportation (DOT) number - could be written to each tag. The DOT number designates where the tire was manufactured, its size, unique components of the tire and the week and year it was manufactured.

The RFID tag provides an electronic means of automatically transferring data from the tire to a database, so that full DOT information is available. The AIAG standard - which focuses on tires and uses specific language concerning tires - could actually be applied to any individual vehicle component for tracking purposes.

The 2D label - also developed by the AIAG's RFID Tire and Wheel Identification Work Group - functions similar to the RFID tag, however, the RFID tag can hold more information.

To obtain a copy of the Tire and Wheel Label and Radio Frequency Identification standard document (B-11), contact AIAG's Customer Service Department at (248) 358-3003. The cost of the document is $10 for members and $50 for non-members. AIAG members can download an electronic copy of this document at no charge from the members-only portion of the organization's web site at mows.aiag.org.

Founded in 1982, the AIAG is a not-for-profit trade association of approximately 1,500 automotive and truck manufacturers and their suppliers. AIAG’s purpose is to provide an open forum where members cooperate in developing and promoting solutions that enhance the prosperity of the automotive industry. Its focus is to continuously improve business processes and practices involving trading partners throughout the supply chain.

Nokia , Philips and Sony establish the Near Field Communication ...

From MTekk IT Services, Australia ... these efforts.". NFC technology evolved from a combination of contactless identification (RFID) and interconnection technologies. NFC ...

The NFC Forum: NFC technology – jointly developed and promoted by Philips and Sony – is a means to overcome the dizzying complexity of modern technology in our increasingly connected world. The aim for NFC is to establish the technology as an open platform offering the best benefits for everyday consumers. To achieve this goal, Philips and Sony have teamed up with Nokia to establish the NFC Forum, which will promote the implementation and standardization of NFC technology. With other companies invited to join, NFC will enable users to access content and services in an easy and intuitive way by simply touching smart objects and connecting devices just by holding them next to each other.

Standardization and technical details: Targeted to become a widely adapted contactless infrastructure, NFC is already standardized according to globally accepted standardization bodies, such as ISO (18092), ECMA (340) and ETSI. NFC operates in the 13.56 MHz frequency range, over a distance of a few centimeters. Operating at data rates of 106 kbits/s and 212 kbits/s, NFC is compatible with Philips’ MIFARE? (ISO 14443 A) and Sony’s FeliCa smart card protocols, respectively. However, higher transmission speeds can be achieved between dedicated NFC devices -- initially up to 424 kbits/s -- with potential for higher bit rates.

Vision: To enable users of any handheld electronic device to access content and services in an intuitive way by simply touching smart objects and connecting devices just by holding them next to each other. To bring this vision to life, the NFC Forum invites all interested parties -- companies from mobile communications, consumer electronics, chip manufacturing, computing, media and entertainment, telecom and payment services sectors -- to join the NFC Forum and help further our goals.

Working Groups: NFC Forum will deliver on its mission through the efforts of member-driven working groups, focused initially on the areas of Standards & Interoperability, and Education & Outreach, with additional working groups to be formed as needed.
