Suvarnabhumi Airport, in Thailand, selects Intermec to supply an RFID and barcode system to track goods in the airport's Cargo Free Zone. ...

... "Suvarnabhumi Airport, the central air traffic hub for Southeast Asia, features an NBIA Cargo Free Zone IT project, which has some of the most up-to-date technology and services in the region, including its RFID Customs Free Zone management system. RFID will be a core part of the IT system for the Cargo Free Zone and will be used to track incoming and outgoing goods in the cargo warehouse and terminal.
The Cargo Free Zone also uses Intermec bar code printers and readers to monitor cargo, complementing the RFID system. Cargo cars entering terminals have RFID tags attached while their loads have bar code labels, which are read using Intermec's bar code readers. The RFID system for the Cargo Free Zone uses a range of Intermec RFID equipment, including 150 Intermec IF5 intelligent fixed RFID readers, 100 Intermec 751 rugged mobile computers, 100 Intermec IP3 portable RFID readers, 600 RF antennae, 46,000 reusable plastic RFID tags, and 4,000 windshield RFID tags. The bar code system includes ten PD4 bar code printers and ten 1551 rugged handheld scanners. " ...

Microsoft and Intermec collaborate to deliver RFID application at Blue C Sushi. The implementation of RFID (radio frequency identification) from Intermec and business process software technology from Microsoft and Kikata enables this sushi restaurant to track food, calculate customer bills, and improve the experience. The system is comprised of: Intermec RFID readers and antennas, Microsoft BizTalk RFID, and Kikata's Ebisu Live Inventory Management software. ...

... "Blue C Sushi restaurants are based on the concept of kaiten sushi where customers select plates of sushi from a rotating conveyor belt that winds through the restaurant moving past every table. Customers pay based on the number and types of plates they choose. At Blue C Sushi, plate colors indicate prices for specific items. RFID technology replaced the original tracking system, which used bar codes on the bottom of the plates. That system could only track the time a plate was put on the conveyor belt and that a customer had pulled it off. The new RFID system provides much more detailed business intelligence, like what item is on the plate, how long it has been on the conveyor, which chef produced it and which menu items are running short. The system uses the Intermec IF5 fixed mount RFID readers in conjunction with customized Intermec RFID antennas that are placed into the chefs' cutting boards and integrated into the conveyor. Intermec worked with 3M to create tags that adhere firmly to the bottom of the plates and can withstand restaurant wear and tear, including hot dishwashing cycles with harsh detergents. " ...

... "Oakton's RFID program provides hands-on experience in a simulated industrial warehouse environment to prepare students for opportunities in the workplace. Intermec provided its IF5 RFID readers with 700 series mobile computers and portal antennas. Stratum Global, an RFID software provider and Intermec Honours Partner, was lead on the project and provided its TagNet RFID software solution suite. The Oakton RFID lab is designed to emulate a factory portal where workers move tagged boxes or pallets through the passageway allowing inventory processing to occur automatically. The curricula will prepare students for managerial and technical positions within the transportation, warehousing and logistics industries. In addition to gaining RFID technical expertise, the program will teach students how to measure and communicate the business value of RFID implementations to non-technical managers. " ...

... "Intermec announced a cooperative research effort with the NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center to investigate new Automatic Identification Tracking (AIT) System technologies. New technologies to be developed will qualify machine-readable symbol markings and RFID devices for use on space-borne vehicles.
Intermec also will prepare additional marked samples and soft and rigid RFID tags to be included in MISSE 6, scheduled for July 2007. The part identification markings and tags - which remain readable after exposure to the extreme levels of ultraviolet radiation, atomic oxygen, hard vacuum, and contamination in low earth orbit - will be evaluated and then certified for use on future space vehicles and added to NASA's part identification requirements.
