Microsoft on RFID

Microsoft and its partners have a vibrant RFID program underway. Much of Microsoft's focus is on the mid-market: small and medium sized businesses. They are developing an RFID services architecture and have multiple pilots underway to build their competence in the RFID marketplace.

Via Microsoft Business Solutions: The Little Chip That Will Change Your Supply Chain Forever: Microsoft Business Solutions recently announced that it was expanding the scope of its RFID initiative to help small and midmarket businesses meet RFID technology compliance mandates from large trading partners and drive efficiencies in internal operations. For example, Microsoft and several partners recently are collaborating to assist a U.S.-based midmarket snack manufacturer in their RFID implementation.

Microsoft RFID Architecture: Microsoft Architecture for RFID: The fully integrated Microsoft architecture for RFID embraces a vision for increased operational efficiency and reduced costs. It provides a framework for enabling the exchange of RFID related data in near real time across disparate systems and corporate boundaries. It also supports standards for global data synchronisation and interoperability with EPC.

Reference materials on Microsoft RFID Technology:

Microsoft Unwraps Technology at TechEd 2005 to Spark Greater Adoption of RFID: Microsoft's RFID infrastructure taps the power of the .NET Framework, SQL Server and Visual Studio .NET to make integration and deployment of RFID easier and less cost: Businesses around the world are evaluating how RFID technologies can enable them to streamline business processes and provide real-time visibility into their supply chain. However, adoption of RFID is hindered by many factors, including complexity of device management, lack of standards, limited solutions to cleanse volumes of data, and costly integration with existing business applications. Microsoft Corp.'s RFID infrastructure is intended to address these pain points and stimulate faster adoption of RFID. Built on top of the .NET Framework, Microsoft's RFID technology can be embedded within third-party applications or used on its own to capture and interpret data from sensors and manage business events in an easy-to-deploy, user-friendly environment. Companies may use RFID technology to enhance business processes, saving them time and money and improving their visibility into key business performance metrics.

RFID Warehouse Robot

NEWS

... "The robot can conduct continuous surveillance along one of several pre-established paths, steer itself to stay on the path and avoid obstacles, and inventory specified items as it moves through a storage area. The robot's built-in RF interrogator scans RFID tags affixed to items in storage and sends the information to a collection point for appropriate action. The MDARS robot reduces the need for safety and inventory control personnel and can help prevent losses of high-dollar or controlled items. RFID Enables Strategic Supply

Strategic Supply

... "In today's global economy, in-transit visibility is vital. Just-in-time manufacturing and assembly operations require firms to know sometimes to the minute when a key part or component will arrive from a supplier. Technology such as radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and automated identification technology (AIT) can provide this information to all firms in the supply chain. Customers increasingly demand the capability to use the Internet to track their package from the time it is shipped to the time it arrives at their home or office. FedEx provides world-class tracking capabilities for items shipped through its network of airborne and ground-based transportation channels. Wal-Mart's move to implement passive RFID tags may accelerate the spread of this technology throughout the retail sector given the huge volume of goods moved through Wal-Mart distribution channels. The payback from implementing such programs can be substantial. For example, Savi Technology's implementation of DoD's Ammunition AIT project produced a 98% cost avoidance in the inventory/reconciliation of category I ammunition. Scanning labels and reconciling inventories used to take 40 man-hours per building. It now takes 30 minutes per building, yielding a cost avoidance of over $860,000." ...

RFID Tracking the Future

Tracking the Future

Vicky Falcón, NAVAIR Public Affairs, writes ...

... "The lab is also conducting product tests for NAVSEA, outfitting a test sample of spare parts for Virginia-class submarines with RFID tags. The tests are being run with the shipbuilder to assess the performance and savings of using RFID. According to O'Brien, the team is also working on a research and development project for the Office of Naval Research, building an RFID tag that uses ultra wide-band frequency. We're on the leading edge of this technology, said O'Brien. Ultra-wide band was just approved for limited use four months ago. The test will be used to show the viability of RFID tags with sensors attached to monitor ozone-depleting substances (halon and freon) at the storage depository in Yorktown, Va. If a leak occurs at the facility, said O'Brien, an alert will automatically be triggered through the tag to the database." ...

Latest RFID Tag Sharpens Asset Visibility ...

Jessica Walter-Groft, Defense Distribution Center’s Public Affairs Office, writes ...

... "Using the Iridium network of global satellites, the prototype is a combination unit that includes a traditional RFID tag along with global positioning system and satellite capabilities, giving defense transportation personnel access to the tag's location within feet of its exact position. As materiel release orders flowed in to DDSP, the Department of Defense's largest warehouse and the eastern strategic distribution platform for military supplies, a group of self-proclaimed wire heads from various federal agencies and private technology companies worked alongside DDSP information technology personnel to write shipment data onto the 3G prototype tags." ...

RFID Unique Identification (UID)

Understanding Unique Identification (UID)

Jody Kann, Information Technology Specialist, Automatic Identification Technology Office, Naval Supply Systems Command, writes ...

... "The DoD's vision for UID is incorporated in the UID Policy for uniquely identifying tangible items (i.e., equipment, repairables, material and consumables) by relying on international standards and commercial item markings. These uniquely identified tangible items will allow for better item tracking and provide more accurate data for management, financial, accountability and asset management purposes. UID will be required if: (1) the cost of the acquisition is $5,000 or more; (2) the item is either serially managed, mission essential, a controlled inventory piece of equipment or a repairable item, or a consumable item where permanent identification is required; (3) it is a component of a delivered item, if the program manager has determined that UID is required; or (4) a UID or a DoD-recognized UID equivalent is available." ...

RFID Vision: Wired for Transformation! ...

Wired for Transformation!

Commander Steve MacDonald, Office of Chief of Naval Operations, Supply Operations and Policy Branch (OPNAV N413), writes ...

... "The Chief of Naval Operation's vision, Sea Power 21, ForceNet calls for the use of enablers, which includes RFID, to integrate sensors, networks, C2, platforms, etc. In context with recent DoD RFID policy, Navy is currently testing RFID technologies and developing business rules and architecture to enable logistics processes including: automatic receipting, Total Asset Visibility (TAV)/Intransit Visibility (ITV), and inventory management. The desired end state includes: end-to-end intransit visibility for all material, from vendor or depot, through any node, to any customer, anywhere in the world; hands-free automatic receipting, inventory, real time financial take up and accountability of material, and a wealth of data at your fingertips. The benefits of such a system would be tremendous, and the potential contribution it would provide to current and future readiness compels our engagement to further explore RFID tagging as an enabler to help us get there. RFID Frequency Interference Criteria ...

Communications Office - Weekly Reports - October 30, 2003

... "Several months back, companies manufactured and marketed RFID tags for tracking shipping containers. A request was submitted to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) to allow RFID transmitters to operate at a higher duty cycle than 433 MHz, a frequency used by the Department of Defense. In response to the request to the FCC, the Air Force (AF) asked the FCC to consider changing the frequency to 449 MHz, a frequency used by wind profiler radars. After discussions with NOAA and a meeting with the FCC, the AF has dropped their request. W/OPS11 has reviewed the wind profiler radar frequency assignment and found no established interference criteria. If wind profiler radars become part of the inventory of operational systems, the NWS must establish interference criteria. " ...

RFID E-briefs Senator Bill Nelson ...

E-briefs from the office of US Senator Bill Nelson

... "Bill also has weighed in on another privacy issue regarding a new technology being used by businesses, as well as the United States government. The technology, called Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), uses microchip tags with miniature antennae that are attached to objects and then used to collect consumer information such as the cost, date of purchase, and even the color of an item. Without consumers' knowledge, businesses or employers could use scanners to read the information being transmitted about the tagged products. For example, retailers could scan the contents of a woman's purse as she enters their stores, or employers could scan the contents of employees' backpacks to see what medications are being carried. If abused, the technology could pose a significant range of privacy and security risks." ...

RFID Embedded Into Structures ...

Chapter 10 - Telecommunications Handbook for Transportation Professionals

... "A major advantage of RFID devices is that they can be embedded within the structure of an item. The tag activates on receipt of a radio signal from a reader device. A drivers license could have an embedded tag for instant identification. RFID Tags could be placed in sections of roadway. Maintenance crews could be directed to locations that need repair or restoration. Their vehicle would have a tag reader that reports the completion of the repair. A police officer at the scene of an accident could scan in an identification tag in a damaged section of guardrail. The information would be directly reported to a DOT District maintenance office to schedule repairs." ...
