... "Integrating an RFID infrastructure has enabled Throttleman to increase the efficiency of its distribution center by 60% and ensures that stock is quickly and accurately routed to the appropriate stores. Affixed with Avery Dennison RFID labels, items are shipped from Throttleman's manufacturing plant in India to their distribution center in Portugal. Upon arrival, TAGSYS' UHF RFID tunnel identifies and counts the content of each box with scan rates of up to 18,000 articles per hour. Comparing the list of scanned items to the packing slip, TAGSYS' UHF RFID tunnel automatically identifies discrepancies and generates an alert to check content. This reduces the amount of time items remain in Throttleman’s distribution center from 4.9 days to less than 24 hours, thereby quickly and accurately replenishing a store's inventory. Systems integrator, Creative Systems, was chosen by Throttleman to define and install an RFID system to improve efficiencies throughout their supply chain. Creative Systems selected TAGSYS for its expertise in item-level RFID infrastructure systems, and Avery Dennison to supply the RFID labels. " ...

Oatsystems and HP implement RFID technology in the supply chain

... "HP tracks its printers using OATSystems' Asset Tracking Solution integrated with existing SAP and Baan ERP systems as well as HP's proprietary manufacturing execution system. The system tracks each printer from its origin on the assembly line through critical transition points to its eventual outbound shipment. HP also uses the system to create product DNA, storing unique information on the RFID tag for each printer. By saving information such as install-by dates and testing results, HP tracks and identifies printers returned for repairs under warranty. Having a full record of the printer's history has enabled HP to improve its repair service and allowed it to return printers to customers much more efficiently. HP estimates that RFID-enabling its printer manufacturing operations has reduced the company’s printer inventory by 17 percent by increasing visibility into the location of its products. " ...

RFID Asset Protection ...

PWC Mexico will implement Axcess's RFID asset management capabilities to protect computing assets in order to reduce shrinkage. ...

... "Under the terms of the rollout, PricewaterhouseCoopers in Mexico will utilize AXCESS' Dual-Active RFID solution for its custodial asset management capabilities; allowing for real-time detection when a valuable asset such as a laptop is in or out of a secured area. When an item is removed from company premises without authorization the technology will deliver actionable intelligence through which a reliable security response can be determined and initiated. Corporations face an uphill battle when it comes to securely and accurately managing their physical assets. In 2005 alone, losses from the theft of proprietary data from corporations and other institutions more than doubled compared to the previous year totaling $356,000 per incident. AXCESS' RFID solutions provide companies with the tools necessary to protect assets and data from theft and help organizations comply with federal and state laws, which necessitate the development of an internal IT best practice for managing computer assets and the notification to individuals if a client's personal data may have been compromised. PricewaterhouseCoopers identified the potential for significant ROI by managing assets and by preventing computer theft. In addition to preventing monetary loss associated with the theft or loss of IT assets, the company recognized how AXCESS' ActiveTag solutions could empower them with the ability to better protect their clients' data through increased accountability and security. The AXCESS solution implemented for PricewaterhouseCoopers addresses the problem of preventing theft or loss of assets and data by offering individual asset tracking and protection, dynamic wireless custodian assignments to assets, complete reports, and wireless alerting to exception-based security events. One key to the reliability of the solution is AXCESS' battery powered RFID tags which generate strong signals to enable metal encased computers to be identified even when hidden, which is far superior to passive RFID and bar code systems which require some form of line-of-site recognition. In addition to the GPS data, this technology supports the integration of digital sensor devices including, digital cameras, laser range finders, barcode scanners, and RFID readers. By utilizing speech recognition, there is an increase of data collection speed and accuracy approaching five times that of traditional data collection methods. The system also reduces the training requirement for rolling out a new data collection system and increases the safety of the data collectors by allowing them to work in a hands free and eyes up environment. Research on RFID in Construction ...

From BFRL: Construction Metrology and Automation Group ...

... "The proposed work would involve investigation of 1) the ability of using a LADAR to acquire information (such as color, type of material, distinct patterns, fiducial point identifiers, etc,) about an object in addition to range data, and 2) the fusion of LADAR and other sensors. These other sensors could be a) RFID tags that contain encrypted data about the scanned object, i.e, beam, column, part number, etc., b) micro-reflective sensors arranged in a standardized pattern or at pre-determined fiducial locations on an object to allow for identification, and/or c) a camera to provide a concurrent image of a scanned scene. The additional information from the hybrid LADAR does not identify objects per se, but is used to aid in object identification. Additional intelligence will have to supplied/added to a) pick out and extract the data (points) from a point cloud for further processing, and b) correctly identify the object. In the first instance, user intervention is the most likely source of this intelligence. In the latter instance, the intelligence could be in the form of user intervention, image processing algorithms (if a camera is used), and/or a database containing objects that would most likely be found in a particular scene. RFID Privacy Discussion

From Congressional Record: March 23, 2004 (Senate), Page S2989-S2990, Mr. Barry Steinhardt, Director of the Technology and Liberty Program, The American Civil Liberties Union ...

... "The privacy issues raised by RFID tags are vitally important because they are representative of a larger trend in the United States: the seemingly inexorable drift toward a surveillance society. As Congress considers the privacy issues posed by RFID chips, I urge you to view them in the larger context -- a world that is increasingly becoming a sea of data and databases, where the government and private corporations alike are gathering more and more details about our everyday existence. The explosion of computers, cameras, sensors, wireless communication, GPS, biometrics, and other technologies in just the last 10 years is feeding what can be described as a surveillance monster that is growing silently in our midst. Scarcely a month goes by in which we dont read about some new high-tech method for invading privacy, from face recognition to implantable microchips, data-mining to DNA chips, and now RFID identity tags. The fact is, there are no longer any technical barriers to the creation of the surveillance society. While the technological bars are falling away, we should be strengthening the laws and institutions that protect against abuse. Unfortunately, in all too many cases, even as this surveillance monster grows in power, we are weakening the legal chains that keep it from trampling our privacy. " ...

RFID Access Control: TSA Announces 8 Airports Participating in an Access Control Pilot ...

From U.S. Newswire (press release), DC ... eight airports have been selected to participate in TSA's Access Control Pilot Program which will test Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, Anti ...

TSA will select airports and technologies for the program. Biometric technologies, possibly including fingerprints, retinal (iris) scans, and facial recognition, are expected to be part of the mix. So are next-generation surveillance cameras that could be used at access points for secure areas to guard against a second person slipping into a secure area on the heels of someone with proper credentials. Technologies in the program could also contribute to a Transportation Worker Identification Card, which is being developed and is expected to be used by millions of workers across all forms of transportation.

The Aviation and Transportation Security Act mandated that the "Administrator shall establish pilot program in no fewer than 20 airports to test and evaluate new and emerging technology for providing access control and other security protections for closed or secure areas of the airports. Such technology may include biometric or other technology that ensures only authorized access to secure areas."

Access to airport controlled areas must be secured and the physical security of aircraft must be ensured. Revision of the basic code of federal regulations for airport and air carrier security published in the Federal Register on August 1 1997 will include strengthening access controls and aircraft security. Research has begun on more efficient and effective use of existing perimeter and sensitive area surveillance systems. The FAA is conducting research on radio frequency identification tags that could possibly assist in tracking checked baggage movement in secure areas of the airport.

RFID Sensors: Measurement software launched

From Confectionery News, France ... Another temperature measurement concept to have been recently launched is Syscan International’s new RFID-based Tempasure solution for monitoring shipments ...

TempaSure® includes a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) with CF expansion pack, Syscan’s CF reader and software in combination with KSW Microtec's TempSens RFID label which can be adhered to any packaged product. The label can be programmed to record temperature data at regular intervals or to record data only when the product temperature is outside certain pre-programmed parameters. At any time during transportation or indeed after the period of shipment, the data on the RFID label can be collected via the CF reader, which is attached to a handheld device and transmitted wirelessly or otherwise, to a laptop or PC.

The Syscan RFID Reader with Compact Flash Interface (CF Reader) is a contactless read-write device for a broad range of 13,56 MHz tags. The reader plugs into standard CF slots or PCMCIA (via adapter) slots of handhelds, organizers, tablets, laptops or PCs without additional hardware.

Business is looking more and more at RFID as the preferred Automatic Identification and Data Capture technology because of its accuracy, longevity and cost effectiveness over other systems; in particular barcode. While barcodes do provide a form of electronic recognition, they do not deliver on tasks that require consistency, integrity and longevity. The problems with barcodes are largely eliminated by the correct choice of RFID tags and reader systems.

Syscan currently carries two different types of RFID based temperature monitoring devices in its product line. Both can be used to monitor products in the supply chain. The tags have a memory capacity that stores the time and temperature of the product as it travels to its destination. Temperature ranges and recording intervals are easily programmable using Syscan's software..

i-Q8T & i-Q32T ILR Technology Transponders (UHF), i-Q8T & i-Q32T Features:

Range 100 meters, Frequencies of 866 and/or 916 mHz, 8k or 32k configuration, Crystal controlled time, Updateable firmware, Additional CPU memory, Software Battery monitoring, Hour meter, Tag Differentiation, 1200 or 32000 Temperature monitoring blocks, Available in waterproof format, LED pick-to-light option
