RFID Lockers at Splash La Mirada Aquatics Center Improves Customer Experience

Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center in California has implemented RFID-enabled lockers to simplify the customer experience by enabling access through the guests’ RFID (radio frequency identification) wristbands. ...

... "The process at Splash! begins as guests receive a disposable Smart Band wristband from the service desk. Developed by Precision Dynamics Corporation (PDC) of San Fernando, CA, Smart Band is a non-transferable wristband with a securely sealed RFID microchip, which is programmed with a unique 16-character code. When scanned by a RFID reader at locker access stations, a low-power radio wave activates the chip to securely collect and transfer data. Axcess International's Micro-Wireless Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system will be implemented by the U.S. military to enable automatic inventory accounting and perimeter security for its ordnance assets. ...

... "Micro-Wireless technology allows for ultra-small, low cost wireless identification transmitters to be assigned to each asset, enabling automatic tracking, local area location determining and automatic security monitoring. The military initially selected Axcess' MicroWireless system for a pilot program because of its proven domain expertise in automatically identifying, tracking and protecting assets. During the thorough laboratory testing that began early last year, the military integrated the Axcess system into its core software system. The total system is now being implemented in the arms storage facility. Various forms of wireless tags are placed on the different types of armament. The items' electronic identifications are enrolled in the software to provide an automatic, real time inventory of each armament and its location based on its transmitted signal. Any unauthorized movement of an armament outside the storage area, automatically triggers an alert. The handling of armaments can be linked to authorized service personnel electronically via an RFID personnel badge so the authorized movement does not trigger an alarm. " ...

Token works with RFID to enable vehicle identification

... "Vehicle locking and starting: In addition to supporting long range communication to allow in-motion identity verification for gate access, the plusID 90 can be used with commercially available vehicle starting and locking systems that are designed to work with standard card-type access credentials. plusID supports all of the RFID access card formats offered by HID to provide the assurance of biometric identity verification of the driver when they enter and start the vehicle, as well as when they approach vehicle gates. Combining driver identity verification with vehicle identification: Privaris gate and vehicle solutions can be easily combined with long-range RFID technology, such as that used in automated toll road systems, to identify vehicles insuring that the right driver is behind the wheel of the right vehicle. RFID tags on the vehicle's windshield communicate with receivers mounted in the vehicle travel lane. Information from the vehicle RFID system is compared with the data from the driver's plusID to verify a match - the resulting combination insures not only the driver's identity, but that they are in their approved vehicle. RFID Security Memory Cells

Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have invented a cheap and efficient means to secure for radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags. The innovation uses variations in the RFID tag memory cells to secure information. ...

... "RFID tags are already used in countless identification and tracking methods, such as passports and inventory control. A common use of these devices is in access control systems, such as corporate or government ID cards, that allow access to buildings and rooms through a tiny radio frequency transmitter. Embedded in these tags are passive systems that respond automatically to electromagnetic fields produced by radio antennas trying to read the tags' memory. This technology, while convenient, can be susceptible to breaches in security; for example, credit cards that use RFID technology are vulnerable to thieves who, with the appropriate equipment, can read information from the card without the victim ever taking it out of a pocket. The team's new security method uses the concept of random numbers, which are used to encrypt data sent by the tags so that each message transmitted is unique. Machines with the right hardware and software, such as your desktop computer, can easily produce a string of random numbers; however, the tiny circuitry of a matchbook-sized RFID tag isn't built for that function. The UMass Amherst researchers' work eliminates the need for specific machinery dedicated to the task. Using specialized software, the tag readers will be able to extract unique data from the tags’ existing hardware. " ...

RFID Laptop Asset Management

Axcess implements RFID asset management system at Universidad Regiomontana in Mexico to secure laptops. ...

... "The University deployed Axcess' ActiveTag RFID physical computer asset protection solution in January 2006 with the goal of reversing asset theft and enhancing personnel tracking. Prior to implementation the university suffered a rate of 10-15 percent in laptop thefts on a regular basis. Following the use of the system, the thefts have been reduced to zero.

Axcess' patented ActiveTagTM RFID/RTLS and sensing systems use small, re-usable battery-powered tags (generically called Dual-Active tags) that when automatically activated, transmit a wireless message typically 30 to 100 feet to hidden palm size receivers. The receivers are connected via standard network simultaneously to the enterprise system software, the existing security alarm equipment, and standalone middleware and end-user software provided by Axcess under the OnlineSurpervisor label. With tags being activated only on-demand and only at control point locations, the system is highly reliable and accurate, with the tags lasting five years or longer depending on the battery being used. The Axcess Control Point architecture has been found to be more reliable than other local positioning methods using Wi-Fi systems or signal strength measurements. Its activation-based positioning can determine if an asset has left a secured area down to 1 foot of accuracy and can also determine its direction. The system alerts responsible personnel on an exception basis, freeing up asset management personnel for other critical tasks. Axcess recently introduced a new, low profile high-powered RFID asset tag measuring only 1in by 3in by 1/4in high. It is uniquely capable of reliably tagging solid metal IT assets, a feat typically difficult for wireless tags. " ...

NIST RFID Security Guidelines and Recommendations

NIST provides guidelines for security of RFID technology. ... A sample of their recommendations are organized by phase of RFID implementation - initiation (prior to design), acquisition and development, implementation, operations and maintenance, and, finally, disposition. In the initiation phase, NIST recommends performing risk assessment to understand threats posed by RFID to the organizations assets. A usage policy should be created that defines assets that should be tagged with RFID and who has the authority to determine what assets get tagged. A transparent privacy policy for RFID should be establised. The organization's information security policy should be updated with regard to the introduction of RFID technology. A training program should be established for the users of the RFID solution that emphasizes security and privacy. Document the RFID standards that you comply with. Disable or destroy RFID tags upon disosal. Other recommendations are in the reference report (PDF). ...

NIST RFID security recommendations

... "RFID devices send and/or receive radio signals to transmit identifying information such as product model or serial numbers. They come in a wide variety of types and sizes, from the size of a grain of rice or printed on paper to much larger devices with built in batteries. Unlike bar coding systems, RFID devices can communicate without requiring a line of sight and over longer distances for faster batch processing of inventory and can be outfitted with sensors to collect data on temperature changes, sudden shocks, humidity or other factors affecting products. As RFID devices are deployed in more sophisticated applications from matching hospital patients with laboratory test results to tracking systems for dangerous materials, concerns have been raised about protecting such systems against eavesdropping and unauthorized uses. Retail RFID Implementation: European Shoes

Checkpoint Systems enters into a strategic agreement with RENO, European shoe retailer. The implementation will be completed in May. The RFID system will support reduction of shrinkage and improvement of the customer experience. ...

Checkpoint supports RENO implementation of RFID in the retail customer experience

... "Switching from EM to NDRF technology, RENO wants to further optimise both its market presence and its operational processes. To be successful in the shoe retail trade the goods have to be presented in the right way. As well as displaying shoes in pairs and in boxes, an open shop construction is also particularly important, says Konigs. With NDRF, the current aisle widths in the branches could be increased from 90 cm to 1.80 m and a more customer friendly entrance introduced. Further improvements in the business process include simpler deactivation of the tagged goods at the point of sale. The cashier transaction is sped up while it guarantees that no customer will leave the store with a tag that accidentally remains activated, thereby triggering a false alarm. RENO's decision for radio-frequency source tagging is a further step towards a uniform standard in security technology, not only in Germany, says Ulrich Schafer, Vice-President and General Manager NCE Unit, of Checkpoint Systems. For retailers, radio-frequency source tagging is the best option for reducing the costs of shrinkage. At the same time they are able to create a customer-friendly shopping atmosphere, which will help to boost sales. " ...

... "The 401-suite northwoods-themed family resort with an indoor waterpark, implemented PDC's RFID Wristband System to provide guests with enhanced services including hotel room keyless entry, cashless payment options, automated arcade token dispensers, and more. At registration, guests are given a Smart Band, which is embedded with a 13.56MHz RFID inlay. The automated wristbands allow for keyless entry into hotel rooms for all family members, eliminating the need to carry hotel room keys. MICROS' POS workstations enable guests to make cashless payments with the RFID wristbands throughout the resort. Also, the RFID wristbands eliminate the chances of money getting wet or lost while at the water park. Guests are given the choice of using the RFID wristbands to make charges directly to their rooms or to set up a pre-funded account for purchases. The pre-funded account is a great way to allow children to purchase products and services without giving them full charging privileges. Both types of accounts can be increased or funded by using Smart Kiosks throughout the resort or at the registration desk. All information on the wristband is encrypted providing maximum security for guests. " ...
