Handheld RFID for Goods Receipt

Gerry Weber International selects Nordic ID handheld RFID to enable its global RFID project where high mobility was part of the requirements. ...

... "The RFID handhelds will be most heavily used in goods receiving and inventory management at about 150 stores. Nowadays it takes us about two days to complete the inventory on a 200-square-foot retail space, says Christian von Grone, CIO at Gerry Weber. After the rollout, this process will take only about ten minutes.

Nordic ID handsets were chosen after a meticulous selection process, including extensive testing of different devices. The fact that the PL3000 Cross Dipole is able to read tags from up to four feet away, even through closed boxes, was the deciding factor in its choice. For Gerry Weber, this is especially important when tagged goods, in individual boxes, are transported in bulk on pallets. " ...

Clinical RFID Tagging

RFID tag will be used as marker for surgery. ...

... "This device and associated clinical techniques promise a major advance for patients and their doctors. Since lesions can be marked days or weeks prior to surgical biopsy, the scheduling of the localization procedure and surgical procedure can be uncoupled, a great advance in logistics and workflow. Surgeons will have the potential benefit of active intra-operative localizations, and pathologists may be able to use the tag to help guide tissue inspection.

We are hopeful that multiple tags may allow bracketing of lesions. We believe that the SenoRx RFID procedure will also offer the advantages of no radiation and the capacity for the surgeon to inspect the breast pre-operatively at any time after the RFID tag is implanted using the detector/reader in order to confirm that the RFID tag is easily detectable from the skin surface and to help plan the best surgical approach. The detector/reader includes a pencil-like probe that is used intra-operatively to pinpoint the location of the tag. " ...

RFID Baggage Handling Savings Potential Significant

Baggage handling report confirms opportunity size and positions RFID technology as a means of reaping cost savings benefits. ...

... "According to this year's Baggage Report published today at the Passenger Terminal Expo in Amsterdam, the air transport industry lost $3.8 billion in 2007 because of growing pressures on baggage management linked to passenger volumes, tight aircraft turnaround times, and heightened security measures. Figures from WorldTracer, SITA's fully-automated system for tracing lost and mishandled passenger baggage used by 400 airlines and ground handling companies, show that 42.4 million bags were mishandled or delayed in 2007. The air transport industry handles around 2.25 billion pieces of checked baggage every year. In 2007, the single largest cause of baggage delay was in transfer baggage mishandling, 49%, but this number has been falling steadily since 2005 when it was at 61%. This was followed by ticketing error/ passenger bag switch/ security/ other, 14%; failure to load, 16%; space-weight restriction, 5%; loading/offloading error, 5%; tagging errors, 3%; and arrival station mishandling, 8%. USDA RFID For Bovine TB Disease Control

The USDA implement RFID ear tags in cow populations to control the spread of animal disease. The goal is to link the cattle to their premises of origin. If an outbreak occurs in the future, infected animals can be quickly traced in the supply chain. Bovine tuberculosis investigations are active in several States. ...

... "NAIS-compliant 840 tags provide for individual identification of livestock through a 15-digit number beginning with the U.S. country code. Through the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, the 840 tags allow animal health officials to electronically identify an animal. This increases the efficiency of animal disease investigations that involve the tracing of exposed and potentially infected animals. RFID technology also increases the accuracy of recording the animal's 15-digit animal identification number (AIN). USDA has purchased a total of 1.5 million 840 RF animal identification tags to support animal disease control programs, including the bovine TB and brucellosis programs. " ...

RFID Reusable Container Tracking

Rush Tracking Systems sees RFID technology as a best-in-class enabler of reusable container tracking, increasing the probability that they make it back to their source for reuse. ...

... "Fortunately, there is a straightforward solution: Tracking with RFID. Reusable container tracking is a logical response to your investment and the daily effort to determine where reusable containers are when you need them. Many companies understand the value of container tracking and have been tracking them for years. The problem is that in the U.S. containers are almost tracked by barcode scans. This human-dependent process is tedious and expensive because of the labor required to scan each empty or full container. Those who do it often subcontract the tracking to Third Party Logistics (3PL) firms, and even that is problematic.

The value proposition is quite simple; equip lift trucks in your supply chain with RFID readers. As RFID-tagged reusable containers transition from one area to another, the movement is automatically read (while performing regular material movements) and recorded in a database. RFID tracking can define the facility or even more discrete locations within a building. Additionally, operators can be directed by the system what and where to pick, pack and ship loads. This is similar to pick-to-light but with a twist: The RFID system does all the validation automatically without any human intervention." ...

Dillards RFID Pilot Program Will Tag Merchandise Items with Electronic Product Code

Dillards. a national retailer that operates in 29 states, is beginning an item-level Radio Frequency Identification, RFID, tagging pilot in its stores this month, in order to assess the technology's impact on customer service through improved product availability. ...

... "The pilot will consist of certain styles of merchandise being marked with RFID-enabled tags. The RFID/EPC (Electronic Product Code) tags function like an intelligent barcode and contain only the Electronic Product Code unique to each garment. The tags are designed to be removed at the time of purchase. They are not required in the event that the customer wishes to return the garment. No link will be made between the garment information held by the tag and the customer's personal information. These new tags will enable store associates to perform more frequent inventory counts on merchandise, with the ultimate goal of more timely replenishment of out-of-stocks. We believe that the use of RFID technology can enable us to provide an even higher level service to our customers by enhancing our ability to have the right product available at the right time while providing us even more accurate information from our inventory control system. California RFID Bill By Senator Simitian Bans Tagging

State Senator Joe Simitian promotes his Senate Bill 362 that prohibits any person from forcing any other person to undergo an implant in their body of a radio frequency identification (RFID) device. ...

... "Despite wide-ranging support, the RFID industry has declined to support SB 362. In response, Simitian said, I think it's unfortunate and regrettable that the industry hasn't come out in support of SB 362. I understand why we're having a robust debate about the privacy concerns related to RFID, but at the very least, we should be able to agree that the forced implanting of under-the-skin technology into human beings is just plain wrong. I'm deeply concerned that this isn't a given for the industry. Passage of SB 362 ensures that no Californian is compelled to have electronic identifiers of any type embedded in their body. This provides Californians with the personal agency to make such decisions should they have a reason to, as well as another means of protecting their personal information. Once again, California leads the nation in recognizing potential threats to individual privacy and self-determination posed by new technologies, said Jennifer King, Research Specialist at the Samuelson Law, Technology and Public Policy Clinic at U.C. Berkeley School of Law. " ...
