RFID Distribution Logistics

RFID enables warehouse operations and supports improved customer service
RFID technology enables business process improvement for manufacturing and warehouse operations. The shipping process is particularly suited for RFID enablement. RFID supports real-time business process automation at the shipping dock, where paperwork and shipment picking is accelerated to speed the delivery to the customer. ...

... "Once that pallet passes through a specific point at a shipping dock, then the tag is read and the contents of the data loaded earlier gets processed into the enterprise software. This in turn will generate invoices, initiate courier tracking, adjusts inventories, initiates material purchases to name just some of the impact RFID can have for your day-to-day business. Gone too are many of the headaches associated with bottlenecks in the shipping process such as verifying shipments against the bill-of-lading while drivers queue up for their pick-ups, the potential for human error in getting the wrong product on the wrong truck. RFID Supports Nissan Continuous Improvement Initiative

Nissan implements a continuous improvement initiative to target vehicle labor cost reduction, increase logistics throughput accelerating customer service, and enhance vehicle quality through defect elimination early in the product lifecycle. The initiative will be enabled by a wireless architecture and active RFID technology in the Nissan Canton MS manufacturing facility, supplied by WhereNet. ...

Wherenet active RFID tags support Nissan continuous improvement

... "As part of a continuous improvement initiative at its four-million square foot assembly plant in Canton, Mississippi, Nissan will leverage a single wireless architecture to run multiple WhereNet applications, including the WhereSoft Yard Management System (YMS) and Vehicle Tracking and Management System (VTMS), to improve production velocity and throughput, labor productivity, and vehicle quality. Nissan's Canton assembly plant has the capacity to produce 400,000 vehicles per year, including the Altima sedan, Armada full-size sport utility vehicle, Infiniti QX56 full-size sport utility vehicle, Quest minivan, and Titan full-size pickup truck.

Deploying the WhereNet single wireless infrastructure over the entire Canton complex will take less than 90 days. The hardware consists of 1500 active RFID WhereTag transmitters, which are temporarily attached to new vehicles as they roll off the assembly line as part of the WhereNet VTMS system; 700 WhereTag transmitters that are permanently fixed to trailers belonging to Nissan's dedicated suppliers or temporarily attached to others as part of the WhereSoft YMS application; 120 WherePort magnetic exciters positioned between gates and at key choke points across the complex; and a local infrastructure of 80 wireless WhereLAN locating access points.

Nissan also plans to deploy the WhereNet automated gate check-in/out solution known as Fast Gate that supports 24x7 sequenced parts deliveries from Nissan suppliers. Fast Gate senses when a truck is approaching the gate; cross-references detailed information about the truck in a database; and, if authorized, automatically opens the gate to grant entry. Then, based on business rules loaded into the WhereSoft yard management application, the system instructs drivers and yard personnel to deliver the inbound load to the appropriate dock door for just-in-time sequencing of parts based on the assembly line build plan for that work shift.

When new vehicles roll off the Nissan assembly line, each vehicle is assigned an active RFID WhereTag transmitter that is married to the vehicle identification number (VIN). The WhereTag remains on the vehicle until it has been processed and is ready to ship to its final destination. Nissan uses the WhereNet VTMS in off-line areas to manage post-assembly verification and test processes, as well as quality repair, containment and shipping zones. The system includes a logical hierarchy of rules that manages the processing of every vehicle in accordance with its assigned status so that critical orders are processed before lower-priority units. ... "Two Los Angeles-area food distributors have recently purchased and deployed the new ReeferTrak Scout units and base stations at their distribution centers. ReeferTrak Scout is an RFID wireless communications system that gives users full two-way command and control capability of their refrigerated truck and trailer fleets when the units are within a several mile range of a base station-equipped distribution center. When the reefers are operating out of range of the distribution center, the Scout unit logs GPS, trip and refrigeration unit performance data and automatically downloads the information to StarTrak's central data center via the local base station upon return to the center. Customers use the data to immediately confirm temperature compliance of the shipment from origin to destination. The base stations' several mile RFID range provides excellent coverage of distribution facilities, allowing customers to achieve significant savings in yard operations, fuel usage and product quality. RFID TruckTag Program: Minimize Terminal Congestion ...

PierPASS Inc. introduced the RFID-enabled TruckTag program which will enhance security in marine terminals at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The program improves the process of checking trucks and drivers entering the terminals. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) electronic tags will be installed on trucks, similar to the FasTrak and E-ZPass devices used for automated toll collection, accelerating secure check-in at the terminals. ...

... "TruckTag is the second program created by PierPASS, a not-for-profit company established by marine terminal operators in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to address multi-terminal issues. In July 2005, PierPASS launched the OffPeak program, aimed at reducing congestion in and around the ports by establishing new night and Saturday shifts at the ports. By December, more than 1 million truck trips had been diverted out of daytime traffic, leading to a noticeable reduction in congestion. Under the TruckTag program, PierPASS will distribute 10,000 RFID tags to trucking companies, and the trucking companies will be responsible for distributing the tags to their drivers. When a truck arrives at a terminal, the RFID tag will automatically be read by an electronic reader posted at the gate. Simultaneously, the truck driver will insert his commercial driver's license into a machine that will verify that the driver and truck have authorized business at the terminal. Under the current system, each driver displays his commercial driver's license to a security guard upon entry to a terminal.

The marine terminal operators will cover the $1.2 million estimated cost of the program, which is expected to begin by March. There will be no cost to truck drivers or trucking companies for the first 10,000 tags. The active RFID tags, provided by WhereNet Corp., will be distributed through eModal, a database company that tracks trucking companies and drivers. Ninety-nine percent of the trucking companies and drivers working in the ports are already registered with eModal. " ...

AIAG RFID Standard: RFID Tire Traceability

In a demonstration of industry responsiveness and cooperation, the Automotive Industry Action Group's (AIAG) Automatic Identification Data Collection Work Group has released its revised Tire and Wheel Label and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) standard. Developed by the group in just under a year, the standard will provide benefits such as helping error-proof the tire assembly process and automating the collection of tire information and traceability.

Based on the AIAG B-4 Parts Identification and Tracking standard, the revision provides suppliers with guidelines for printing and placement of two-dimensional (2D) bar code labels and passive read/write RFID tags on tires and wheels for product identification.

"The 2D bar codes and RFID tags will help support the assembly process and provide item-level traceability throughout the vehicle's lifecycle," said William J. Hoffman, chairman of AIAG's RFID Tire and Wheel Identification Work Group and manager of Auto Supply Chain for Intermec Technologies Corp. "With a 2D label or RFID tag, a portable database can reside on tires, increasing accurate data capture and reducing the dependency of looking up tire information on a computer."

Placed on the inside of vehicle tires, the RFID tags would identify tires that are associated with a specific vehicle. Data - including a 12-character coding structure or Department of Transportation (DOT) number - could be written to each tag. The DOT number designates where the tire was manufactured, its size, unique components of the tire and the week and year it was manufactured.

The RFID tag provides an electronic means of automatically transferring data from the tire to a database, so that full DOT information is available. The AIAG standard - which focuses on tires and uses specific language concerning tires - could actually be applied to any individual vehicle component for tracking purposes.

The 2D label - also developed by the AIAG's RFID Tire and Wheel Identification Work Group - functions similar to the RFID tag, however, the RFID tag can hold more information.

To obtain a copy of the Tire and Wheel Label and Radio Frequency Identification standard document (B-11), contact AIAG's Customer Service Department at (248) 358-3003. The cost of the document is $10 for members and $50 for non-members. AIAG members can download an electronic copy of this document at no charge from the members-only portion of the organization's web site at mows.aiag.org.

Founded in 1982, the AIAG is a not-for-profit trade association of approximately 1,500 automotive and truck manufacturers and their suppliers. AIAG’s purpose is to provide an open forum where members cooperate in developing and promoting solutions that enhance the prosperity of the automotive industry. Its focus is to continuously improve business processes and practices involving trading partners throughout the supply chain.

RFID Improves Intermodal Connectivity

Interstate-35 Corridor Coalition - This coalition was formed to support a high-priority corridor from Laredo to Duluth, Minnesota. The I-35 Priority Corridor will cut the driving time between Chicago and Mexico City by as much as 40 percent, to 36 hours. Currently it takes trucks crossing the Rio Grand 8 to 12 hours just to get past the border. Included in the Corridor Coalition design are arrangements for building customs inspection stations at a few spots along the highway, allowing the trucks to be checked and then sealed hundreds of miles away from the congested crossings at Laredo. The tracking technologies used will include "smart cards" containing an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) microchip to identify the truck. Assuming the seal was unbroken when the truck crossed the Mexican border, the truck could avoid long lines at the border inspection stations and drive North through the interior. The smart cards could also be used to automate the payment of fees or weight penalties owed to US states traversed en route. The infrastructure required for the corridor would include a fiber-optic cable along the Interstate-35 which would be connected at numerous points to short-range transmitters which would send a radio signal. The signal would interact with the smart cards in the trucks and identify each one to the appropriate computer system, so that highway authorities could ensure that trucks weren’t deviating from the routes they had paid to use.

Critical Technology Elements: Today’s large-fleet trucking companies are equipped with a number of electronic devices in heavy trucks operating in long-haul corridors. These devices allow the driver to pay tolls electronically, keep a trip log for hours-of-service reports, carry cargo manifest and bill-of-lading information on the on-board computer (OBC), perform scheduling and dispatching functions, monitor the performance of the engine or the temperature-sensitive cargo, and carry records of vehicle safety inspections. A typical high-technology truck is likely to be equipped with what is referred to as a "mobile terminal," equipped with devices such as a satellite receiver, an OBC, a data communication unit for processing data that allows messages between drivers and dispatchers to be sent via the satellite connections, a continuous tracking antenna, and an electric motor that keeps the antenna aligned with the satellite. More recently, heavy truck fleets are likely to be equipped with a modem-equipped personal computer for accessing the Internet for load dispatching information. The mobile terminal also includes a removable memory cartridge to transfer data to an office microcomputer or to pass from the recorder to a radio or satellite data receiver for relay to dispatch office ...

RFID in Transportation: The Department of Transportation's Intelligent Transportation System Projects

The Department of Transportation has been working on three Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) intermodal freight projects in coordination with the Secretary’s Office of Intermodalism. The three projects are Air Cargo Electronic Supply Chain Manifest, Electronic Seal System for Container Movement, and Asset Cargo Tracking. All three projects were originally designed to improve various aspects of freight mobility and efficiency. However, all three have as part of their design the ability to pinpoint location of freight assets and cargo based upon the latest reporting point. This can be either with fixedpoint, land-based readers, global positioning satellite readers, cellular network readers, or a combination of the three. If we are lacking knowledge related to the contents of a container or a trailer at anytime or
anywhere in the US, each of these projects has features that will help us to advance to meeting that objective.

The Air Cargo project is designed to handle chain of custody of cargo from its origination at a manufacturer/shipper to its end destination at the receiving air cargo facility or at the end destination customer. In route the originator, carrier and receiver of the goods uses a smart card to hand-off the freight between custodians. The smart card contains the biometric identifier of a thumb-print, the electronic manifest and an image of the driver’s commercial
driver license. All data is stored in a central server and is accessible through the internet. The Electronic Seal project is designed to track containers in-bond from the point of inspection to the destination of the container, through seaports and across land border crossings. The e-seal is a radio frequency device that emits a signal as it passes reader devices, and will display information as to whether or not tampering has occurred with the container.
The Asset Cargo Tracking project is designed primarily to track the chassis, that containers ride on, anywhere in the US. It also is designed for the chassis to know when a container is on it, and when it is tethered to a truck tractor. The information on location of chassis can be sent to a central data processing point by way of radio frequency identification (transponder),
cellular signal or global positioning system signal (satellite). If the container is equipped with a radio frequency device (transponder), the chassis tracking device will read the tag and can convey cargo information to a central data processing point. This project is expanding to include testing of e-seals.

All three of these projects hold promise toward helping the US meet a security objective of establishing an information system that will help those with a need-to-know what is on a container or trailer at any time, anywhere. For more information on these projects contact Mike Onder, DOT Office of Freight
Management and Operations...

Study Shows RFID Security Yields Adds Profit, 2/26/2004

BearingPoint, Inc., McLean, Va., a consulting and systems integration firm, announced the results of a demonstration program, which found that using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) sensors to improve cargo security also resulted in savings for importers. The program involved containers shipped from Thailand during September and October of 2003.

The project affixed RFID sensor seals, also known as e-seals, to conventional bolt locks on standard 40-foot containers at the point of origin. The containers were then transported by truck or rail to Laem Chabang, Thailand, and loaded on ships destined for the United States. The containers were tracked through ports in Taiwan and Korea, and on to the Port of Seattle, using a real-time, Web-enabled software application developed by Savi Technology, the project's prime contractor...
