DOD RFID Contract Continues With Unisys

U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) awards Unisys its follow-on contract to enhance supply chain visibility for military logistics. ...

... "The contract, which includes firm fixed-price and time and materials work, is worth approximately $28 million in the first year, if the government continues to order time and materials work at the current level. The total value of the contract could be approximately $112 million if the government exercises all options and continues to order time and materials work at the current level. In addition, the contract provides for the award of additional fees if performance metrics are exceeded and the imposition of penalties if the metrics are not met. Award of this contract allows Unisys to continue its efforts on the RFID program that began 13 years ago. Unisys has been working with DoD to develop, maintain and enhance an in-transit visibility system utilizing radio frequency identification technology. Providing visibility almost instantaneously into the location of supplies and shipments enables the military to increase its agility to supply units and soldiers with critical supplies in a timely manner, focus on mission-critical activities and respond quickly to mission changes.

Unisys tracks approximately 125,000 shipments of supplies each week, including ammunition, food/rations and water, medical supplies, vehicles, vehicle parts and aircraft. Attached to these shipments are RFID tags that store information vital to the soldier. Unisys tracks shipments across all modes of transportation - truck, rail, ship and air - to their final destinations in combatant commands worldwide. Fixed and handheld readers send and receive radio signals to and from the tags. Because data written to each tag are replicated among five servers, users worldwide have access to the same information on each item. Consequently, decision-makers at all levels of command and throughout the logistics supply chain can plan, prioritize and redirect shipments accordingly and collaboratively. " ...

Walmart RFID: Linda Dillman Shares Status Update

Linda Dillman shares interim results on the Walmart RFID program ...

Walmart RFID: Linda Dillman Shares Status Update: Via WalMart Stores, Inc.: WalMart Improves On-Shelf Availability Through the Use of Electronic Product Codes

... "WalMart customers found items they wanted in stock more often due to the retailer's use of electronic product codes (EPCs) powered by radio frequency identification (RFID) technology when compared to control stores. This is according to an independent University of Arkansas study's initial findings. Researchers at the University of Arkansas found a 16 percent reduction in out-of-stocks. Additionally, the study also showed that out-of-stock items with EPCs were replenished three times faster than comparable items using standard bar code technology. Equally important, WalMart experienced a meaningful reduction in manual orders resulting in a reduction of excess inventory. This is no longer a take-it-on-faith initiative, said Linda Dillman, executive vice president and CIO for Wal-Mart. This study provides conclusive evidence that EPCs increase how often we put products in the hands of customers who want to buy them, making it a win for shoppers, suppliers and retailers. ...

As part of its standard processes, WalMart has focused on driving improved product availability for its customers through a series of initiatives unrelated to RFID technology. The research was structured to isolate the impact of RFID to be able show the improvements directly attributable to the RFID process improvements. The study showed RFID-enabled stores were 63 percent more effective in replenishing out-of-stocks than the control stores, Dillman said. The WalMart RFID team knew that this technology would have a huge impact on out-of-stocks. Now we have an independent study that confirms RFID has a significant impact in retailing, Dillman continued. However, we are not stopping there. This is only one of many changes that RFID will bring. We are already working on initiatives and enhancements that will build on this success. The 16 percent reduction in merchandise out-of-stocks was determined by physically scanning out-of-stocks at the shelf every day. A baseline was established and this was then compared to the number of out-of-stocks in both sets of stores once the RFID technology was enabled in the pilot stores, explained Hardgrave. The net result of the impact of RFID, removing any other influences, was a reduction of 16 percent in the occurrences of products being out-of-stock on the shelf. " ...

DOD RFID: DOD POLICY MANDATES RFID USE ...

From United States Army Logistics Management College ALOG News ... RFID technology is an application of automatic identification technology that quickly collects and reports item, location, time, and transaction data embedded in tags that are placed on containers, pallets, and packages. The data are collected by readers, or interrogators, equipped with antennas. RFID tags can be either active—the tag has its own power source (a battery) to transmit data—or passive—the tag is powered by energy transmitted by the interrogator ...

... The new DOD policy will require suppliers to place passive RFID tags on the lowest possible part, case, or pallet packaging by January 2005. This tagging requirement will apply to all items except bulk commodities such as sand, gravel, and liquids. DOD components will need to create an initial capability to read tags at key sites in preparation for the January 2005 implementation date. A DOD-level integrated product team will refine the policy, designate initial RFID projects for testing emerging RFID capabilities, and develop a long-term implementation strategy. ...

Dr Mahathir confident of a resounding victory for Barisan Nasional

KUALA LUMPUR March 2 - Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Tuesday he is confident that the Barisan Nasional (BN) will win with more than a two-thirds majority in the forthcoming 11th General Election.

He said that in the last general election in 1999, the opposition parties had exploited the issue of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to gain votes.

"But now people already accepted that what has been done was right. It will be better than 1999," he said when asked by reporters on the BN's chances in the upcoming general election.

He earlier held a media conference on the latest development of the Malaysian Microchip (MM Chip) here.

In September last year, Malaysia acquired the property rights to design the MMChip and its production and marketing. A multiband Rfid (next-generation radio frequency identification), the MM Chip measures 0.25 sq mm - about the size of a decimal point - and can be embedded in paper.

It is useful for a variety of purposes such as replacement of barcode tags in retail goods, for differentiation between genuine and counterfeit currency notes, and for use in smart cards...
