RFID Shipment Tracking and Detection

Pliant implements IBM-designed RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) platform pilot program, that tracks shipments between technical centers and customer sites. The RFID system detects tampering in shipped products and enables workforce mobility using handheld devices to track products. Potential tampering can be identified and addressed in real-time. ...

... "IBM Global Business Services consultants collaborated with Pliant to develop a comprehensive RFID technology roadmap, helping Pliant prepare and validate the RFID equipment in its labs. Pliant's IBM software and solution, which has been in place since December 2005, leverages IBM's Data Collection Server software and WebSphere RFID Device Infrastructure. The software installed on Pliant's network helped to create RFID labels which were printed and deployed on pallets and the pallets were tracked as they moved between the two Pliant technical centers in Newport News, Virginia and Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. IBM consultants worked with Pliant to create Web pages on a network database to track the content and movement history of each pallet so that its location was always known.

Pliant implements IBM RFID solution to enable shipment tracking and tamper detection

A wireless handheld RFID reader loaded with the WebSphere RFID Device Infrastructure used to scan the pallets within the plants to immediately look up pallet content information. With the support provided by the IBM Global Business Services team, Pliant now has a proven product concept to access to real-time tracking information for shipments between its two facilities. This setup allowed Pliant to download and monitor critical information which helped protect business-critical applications. " ...

RFID Security: NSF Funds Smart Tag Research ...

National Science Foundation, NSF, provides funding to increase the privacy and security of RFID smart tags, through better cryptographics.

... "Strengthened security for smart tags - the wireless devices that allow drivers to zip through automatic tollbooths or pass a security desk with the flash of a card - is the aim of a new initiative that has received $1.1 million from the National Science Foundation. Led by Kevin Fu of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the researchers are developing much-needed cryptographic protocols, hardware and applications for the increasingly common devices. Millions of consumers already use smart tags—wireless devices that use radio waves to identify and authenticate people and things - and they will become more numerous, says Fu.

Kevin Fu of the University of Massachusetts Amherst investigates RFID smart tag security with NSF funding ...

Smart tags - which include Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tags—are already used to track items from library books to merchandise to cattle. Increasingly, they are replacing the magnetic stripe cards used in security badges and mass transit cards, sometimes also serving as electronic cash. The tags will soon be incorporated into documents such as passports; their use is being explored for tracking medical records and prison inmates. But the tags, which also include contactless smart cards and low-resource sensors, are a technology that has crept in from the edge of the Internet and they present new challenges in terms of security and privacy issues, says Fu.

The unique environment presented by smart tags - they can operate without human intervention and without a physically connected power source - presents unique security concerns, says Fu. Smart tags automatically respond to the device that reads them, so human users don't have the traditional means of giving or denying consent to the reader. This infrastructure of untrusted readers and tags requires an approach that preserves privacy while maintaining the flexibility and convenience that the tags offer.

The new consortium, dubbed the RFID ConsortiUm for Security and Privacy (RFID-CUSP), takes these operating conditions into account and is designing new cryptographic definitions, algorithms and models that will lay the solid foundation on which secure applications can be built. As part of their project, the researchers are working with the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART). The project will result in the first completely open, publicly available software for experimenting with RFID security and privacy. " ...

UMass Amherst: UMass Amherst-Led Research Will Protect Consumers by Ramping Up Security for Smart Tags

Kevin Fu: "Open cryptanalysis of existing RFID protocols will give assurance in the soundness of reliable RFID technology. At UMass, we are investigating how to build secure RFID-based systems. "

The Sensor Revolution: Industry & Commerce: "Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) stands among the fastest-proliferating sensor technologies. RFID systems combine electromagnetic sensing with radio communications. RFID tags and interrogators can be used to track inventory in a warehouse or collect tolls from moving cars. "

Understanding Contactless Smart Card Technologies and Some of the Leading Reader/Card Product Providers (PDF): "That transmission could then be replayed to a reader to gain access illicitly at some time in the future. In contrast, today’s secure contactless cards and readers (such as XceedID ISO-X and HID iCLASS) employ a myriad of cryptographic techniques. These techniques encrypt data in ways that render it useless to an illicit user. Thus, traditional proximity cards and readers provide inferior communication security when compared to secure contactless smart cards and readers. "

Research Project: RFID Market ...

ABSTRACTS - Phase I

... "Many applications are emerging in which communication between low speed, very low cost tags (wireless nodes) and base stations designates energy conservation as a critical system parameter. These applications include warehouse identification tags, hospital ID tags, smart tags, and intelligent ID cards, to name only a few. Tags are small devices with radio or infrared reception/transmission and processing capabilities integrated into a device the size of an ID card or smaller and designed for the lowest possible cost. Cost minimization and network size prohibit the replacement of batteries that need to last for as long as the object needs to be identified, from weeks to several years. The design of wireless access protocols for tag networks requires, therefore, that transmission of data that is often delay-sensitive occur under critical energy conservation and cost constraints. As classical access protocols do not meet these requirements, this project will introduce and evaluate several novel classes of protocols designated for these emerging low speed, low cost networks. The market potential for these systems is estimated at billions of dollars per year, underscoring the importance of this work." ...

LowCost National Sensor Network

A Low Cost National Sensor Network ...

... "Conservative estimates have shown that the attack of September 11th had more than a $200 billion dollar impact on the U.S. economy. An attack using a radiological dispersion device (i.e. a dirty bomb) would be devastating to the U.S. economy and the psyche of our country. New sensor technology could significantly minimize the threat of such a terrorist nuclear attack. For widespread deployment, the sensor technology would need to be low cost and easy to disseminate. This will require a paradigm shift from expensive, fixed or wired networking solutions to a flexible, secure wireless network. This project will develop a wireless sensor network that interfaces to standard management systems. Phase I will define and architect a national sensor network. Simulations for optimum coverage / detection scenarios will be explored. Interface requirements, network topologies, and wireless technologies will be investigated, with a focus on failsafe and secure solutions. " ...

Homeland Security RFID Fact Sheet: Fact Sheet on Radio Frequency Identification Technology

Homeland Security develops fact-sheet, or position paper, on the role of RFID in the US VISIT program ...

From Department of Homeland Security (press release) ... Radio frequency (RFID) identification technology refers to wireless systems that allow a device to read information contained in a wireless device or “tag ...

... US VISIT is exploring the use of RFID technology as a tool that will better enable the program to fulfill its goals, which are to enhance the security of our citizens and visitors, facilitate legitimate travel and trade to and from the United States, ensure the integrity of our immigration system and protect the privacy of our visitors. RFID technology can improve the ability to match entries to exits without impacting processing time at the land borders and record arrivals and departures of a visitor in pedestrian and vehicle lanes – rapidly, accurately and reliably. It will also allow US VISIT to detect a visitor’s tag and provide the primary inspection process with information and a mechanism for establishing an accurate and timely record of exits without slowing a traveler through the process. Finally, RFID can also provide solutions that are not invasive and that protect the privacy of visitors.

Overview: As US VISIT moves toward improving the automated entry-exit system at the nation’s land border ports of entry, RFID technology offers a potential solution for an entry-exit operation that better facilitates legitimate travel and trade. Radio frequencies emanating from RFID tags are far below the levels that could cause any harm to human health and below the typical ambient radio frequencies most people are exposed to in the United States on a daily basis from devices such as TVs and radios. Like these other devices, RFID tags and readers are regulated and their safety is certified by the Federal Communications Commission. ...

US-VISIT continues to test technologies that will help it better achieve its mission to enhance security of our citizens and visitors while facilitating legitimate travel and trade across our borders.

AMERICAN PORT SERVICES CHOOSES AEROSCOUT’S ACTIVE RFID SOLUTION FOR YARD MANAGEMENT

RTLS: AeroScout to Provide Wi-Fi-Based Real-Time Location System for Cross-Docking Facility Operated by APS for World’s Largest Retailer ...

San Mateo, Calif. – December 8, 2004 – AeroScout, Inc., a pioneer in the field of Enterprise Visibility Solutions, today announced that American Port Services (APS), a leading third-party logistics (3PL) provider, has deployed its visibility system at a 60-acre cross-docking facility in Savannah, GA operated by APS on behalf of the world’s largest retailer. APS chose AeroScout and partner AGI Worldwide to implement the system, which accurately tracks the location of hundreds of trailers in the facility in real-time in order to improve efficiency, increase utilization and throughput, and reduce costs.

“The AeroScout system is an outstanding solution to a pressing problem in the logistics and transportation industry, and automates a manual trailer-tracking process that used to take a full team of people and hours every day,” said Ty Cobler, Director of Operations, APS. “We expect that AeroScout’s innovative Wi-Fi-based solution will deliver huge efficiency gains for our facility, and provide a quick return on investment.”

The AeroScout Visibility System will enable APS to benefit from accurate and reliable trailer location data at a low total cost of ownership. With only 20 AeroScout Location Receivers, APS has full visibility of the facility’s 1000 trailer spaces spread over 60 acres. When a trailer enters the facility, it is fitted with a small radio device-- AeroScout’s Wi-Fi-based Active RFID tag. As the trailer moves throughout the yard, the tag’s location is accurately tracked in real-time using standard WLAN protocols, allowing APS to easily locate the trailer for loading and unloading. Information about a trailer’s location and contents is integrated with existing yard management systems and shared with partners or customers.

“Third party logistics providers have to compete through the efficiency of their processes, and AeroScout technology will help APS serve their major retail customers even more effectively,” said Andris Berzins, VP of Marketing and Business Development, AeroScout. “This deployment illustrates the strong value that can be achieved through the use of accurate, reliable asset visibility based on standard wireless networking protocols.”

AeroScout was chosen as the technology provider for APS by partner AGI Worldwide, a supply chain consulting organization. AGI researched the real-time location services market on behalf of APS, and chose AeroScout based on a combination of reliability, high performance and a low total cost of ownership. “AeroScout is far ahead of the pack in offering a full-featured, flexible location system that delivers the combined power of Wi-Fi and Active RFID for yard management environments,” said John Bryant, CEO of AGI.

“The AeroScout solution is more than just an asset tracking application. Combined with tightly integrated yard management, warehouse management, and visibility tools we are able to deliver significantly enhanced value to both APS and their customers by increasing yard turns, improving transloading quality, and increasing yard management efficiency,” stated Bryant.

AeroScout also announced today its newly-expanded AeroScout Visibility System, the only visibility platform on the market to enable multiple types of location with a single Wi-Fi-based infrastructure. As APS grows, it will be able to take advantage of these new capabilities by utilizing the existing AeroScout infrastructure for further location-based applications such as personnel tracking and tag-based vehicle telemetry. APS is already planning to use AeroScout Exciters for choke-point visibility, sending alerts as trailers pass through certain locations. For further details, please see Dec. 7 press release “AeroScout Introduces the Industry’s Most Advanced Wireless Visibility Solution”.

Smart Card Software: Sun Microsystems' New Java Card Enterprise Software Enhances ...

From Wireless Developer Network ... Card(tm) Enterprise Software, an integrated smart-card solution for enhanced network security. By bringing together key elements ...

Java Card technology provides a secure environment for applications that run on smart cards and other devices with very limited memory and processing capabilities. Multiple applications can be deployed on a single card, and new ones can be added to it even after it has been issued to the end user. Applications written in the Java programming language can be executed securely on cards from different vendors. Java Card technology enables smart cards and other devices with very limited memory to run small applications, called applets, that employ Java technology. It provides smart card manufacturers with a secure and interoperable execution platform that can store and update multiple applications on a single device. Java Card technology is compatible with existing smart card standards. The technology enables developers to build, test, and deploy applications and services rapidly and securely. This accelerated process reduces development costs, increases product differentiation, and enhances value to customers. In a manner complementary to the Standard, Enterprise, and Mobile editions of the Java 2 Platform, Java Card technology makes it easy to integrate security tokens into a complete Java software solution. Java Card technology is the leading open, interoperable platform for smart cards. The new version 2.2.1 of the Java Card Specifications provides a small set of targeted enhancements to facilitate alignment with smart card industry standards. In particular it ensures an efficient integration of Java Card technology with the GlobalPlatform 2.1.1 and ETSI "UICC for Java Card" specifications. Java Card technology, version 2.2.1 builds on the success of previous versions, providing smart card vendors, issuers and developers with proven technology for the deployment of secure and interoperable card services. The Java Card Protection Profile is available as a collection of four protection profiles. A profile defines a set of security requirements for the Java Card Runtime Environment, the Java Card Virtual Machine, the Java Card API Framework, and the on-card Installer components. It provides guidelines to develop a secure Java Card platform and obtain high-level security certifications.
