RFID for HACCP

RFID and HACCP Regulations...

RFID technology can play a strong role in enabling the principles of HACCP, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points. In the near, future all newborn animals will be tagged with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and tracked through their supply chain within and across borders. RFID tags offer enhanced tracking capabilities over bar codes for animal application. RFID offers a higher quality read and retention rate and increased data accuracy. In addition, RFID data can be captured more readily throughout the supply chain at various checkpoints, such as collection points, packing plants, etc.

Regulatory agencies in governments support the tagging of all livestock and strongly urge the adoption of electronic RFID tagging. Driving to an RFID-enabled program of 100% HACCP compliance, transportation of an animal is not allowed without an approved RFID tag. In addition, an animal must be received with an approved tag. Electronic records must be kept of all sales transactions, including dates and IDs of animals. Exemptions are being phased out over time. Every sales location is expected to have records indicating the seller, buyer, and date of every animal transaction. In the future, this information is to be forwarded electronically to a regional tracking database in addition to RFID tag data forwarded by animal packing plants and service agencies. RFID technology will enable full trace-ability of HACCP control points through the supply chain, from both a historical and real-time perspective.
