RFID Smart Cards

The Underground train system in the U.K. has upgraded their ticketing system to electronic smart cards, called Oyster cards, which are based on radio frequency identification technology, RFID.  The cards are easy and quick to use.  The new brand name, Oyster, has been created which will apply to the smart card.

The Oyster card is a completely new ticketing system, which is built on RFID technology.   Oyster cards do not need to be removed from purses or wallets to pass through the train gates or to board the bus.  The RFID tags communicate with the readers to identify the use of the public transportation mode.  Additionally, Oyster cards cannot be de-magnetized and they last much longer than card or paper tickets.  Oyster cards are the same size and form factor as credit cards.  They contain an antenna and an RFID chip.  The RFID chip stores information about the validity of the ticket.
