Sales growth in the industrial barcode, retail shelf and ticket product lines for the year offset declines in the supermarket and Inform product lines. Margins for the year were negatively impacted by severance and plant consolidation costs due to the closure of the label converting plant in St. Louis, Missouri and consolidation of manufacturing into plants located in Omaha, Nebraska; Jefferson City, Tennessee and a new facility located in Jacksonville, Florida. Pre-tax income for the quarter and year for the Label business was impacted by a one-time $0.6 million impairment expense related to intangible assets. Department of Defense DOD issues final RFID rule

"DoD has adopted as final, with changes, an interim rule amending the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) to include additional commodities and locations that require package marking with passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. The rule requires contractors to affix passive RFID tags at the case and palletized unit load levels when shipping packaged petroleum, lubricants, oils, preservatives, chemicals, additives, construction and barrier materials, and medical materials to specified DoD locations.

RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION (FEB 2007)

(a) Passive RFID tag means a tag that reflects energy from the reader / interrogator or that receives and temporarily stores a small amount of energy from the reader/interrogator signal in order to generate the tag response.
(1) Until February 28, 2007, the acceptable tags are --

(i) EPC Class 0 passive RFID tags that meet the EPCglobal Class 0 specification; and (ii) EPC Class 1 passive RFID tags that meet the EPCglobal Class 1 specification. This includes both the Generation 1 and Generation 2 Class 1 specifications.

(2) Beginning March 1, 2007, the only acceptable tags are EPC Class 1 passive RFID tags that meet the EPCglobal Class 1 Generation 2 specification. Class 0 and Class 1 Generation 1 tags will no longer be accepted after February 28, 2007. " ...

Intermec provided its IF5 RFID readers with 700 series mobile computers and portal antennas. Stratum Global, an RFID software provider and Intermec Honours Partner, was lead on the project and provided its TagNet RFID software solution suite. The Oakton RFID lab is designed to emulate a factory portal where workers move tagged boxes or pallets through the passageway allowing inventory processing to occur automatically. The curricula will prepare students for managerial and technical positions within the transportation, warehousing and logistics industries. In addition to gaining RFID technical expertise, the program will teach students how to measure and communicate the business value of RFID implementations to non-technical managers. " ...
